Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, we reviewed a quiz over posology. The student is striving with the math, especially with the more complex, multi-stepped problems, so we took the time to work through some problems. I will be getting her more resources to work on for the math portion. We will continue to do extra practice next session as well."
"The student and I finished reviewing for her science test. We went through the vocabulary again (I asked her how to say each word and what it meant in her own words). We also discussed how sound works again, because she asked for some clarification. I think she will do well on her test."
"We first reviewed the student's science homework, covering climate and weather. The homework included questions about winds and the heating of the planet, and the student answered some open-ended questions. I suggested finding some books to help research the answers, and he did. We then covered math, which included some early algebra problems. I came up with some sample problems which went beyond the school material. Finally, we discussed his language arts homework, focusing on the Hunger Games. He designed a slogan and tried to think about creative ideas for a fictional ad campaign. The student continues to impress me. I will continue to use outside materials and work on seeding his interest in the topics."
"The student continued to work on linear systems of equations, and we did one final review of solving application problems of system of equations, and solving system of equations with two variables. We then continued to work on the chapter about the slope intercept version of a linear equation, finding slope, slope of horizontal and vertical lines, and how to find the linear equation given two points and a vertical intercept. We covered parallel lines, and how parallel lines have the same slope, writing linear equations given a parallel line and a vertical intercept, finding a linear equation given two points, and finding a linear equation given a point and a slope. I left her with homework to practice these skills. In physics, we discussed work, machines, mechanical advantage, output force, input force, how to make work easier by changing force, changing direction, and changing the distance over which work is done. I left her with homework from the chapter to complete on her own."
"Today, we finished chapter one of the science textbook. This covered the different components of an experiment (independent and dependent variables, constants, etc.), laboratory safety, models, and critical thinking. We went through a number of practice problems where the student was asked to identify the different variables. He also read a passage and identified violations of laboratory safety. I have asked him to read chapter 2 and write down the main ideas of each paragraph for tomorrow."
"We covered the results of her state assessment test, ways to take tests to improve her scores, looking at private schools, and homework for next session. The student is to go through her old exam looking at ways to increase speed and accuracy. Also, she is going to create a state assessment test vocab flashcard deck."
