Worked with the student on radical expressions.  He didn't have homework so we reviewed the past three sections introducing radical expressions and simplifying various types.  We also looked ahead and worked on the Pythagorean Theorem, distance formula, and similar triangles.  These were all topics with which he had familiarity.  Should be a very successful chapter 11 for him.

Reviewed outcomes of timed practice sections client completed prior to session. Client's raw score on Logical Reasoning section was 16, whereas his goal is 20 - 21. Focused work during session on nuances of quantity language (none, not all, some, many, most, etc.) and matching language in the correct answer choice to the language in the question stimulus. Also reviewed challenging question types, including "Point at Issue" and "Method of Reasoning". Also discussed strategies for improving speed, such as moving through first ten questions as quickly as possible and skipping lengthy questions towards end of section. Proctored two practice Logic Games problem sets, in which client's accuracy was 100%.

We started by working some quantitative math problems so I could see where he's at and what he might be struggling with. He did well on the problems, and answered most of them correctly, but there were a few areas where he could use some review on- including percents and fractions. We then worked on some math concepts problems, where he also did well but struggled a bit with the word problems- we will work on those more. Also the problems I gave him were mostly lower-level, so we will work up to the upper-level problems to make sure he has all those concepts down. Next time we will work on some verbal skills and make flashcards. It was a good, productive session!

During this session, the student and I went over the ACT English section, focusing on incorrect answers as well as questions that he wanted to further discuss. We spent the majority of the time doing this as we used a more challenging book and I wanted to assess the student's progress in that (we had used the same book in our last session). After that, we moved on to a discussion of some edits I made to his essay from the week prior, and then we collaboratively edited the essay that he had written for this week.

Since this was the last lesson I will have with the student before he takes the test on Saturday, we tried to cover any concerns he has. We reviewed all verbal sections of the test, going over grammar rules, plus enforcing how he needs to pay attention to tone of the reading passages.

The student has a fast moving U.S. History class, and since our last meeting, she has covered industrialization, the social problems associated with it, and the reform movements that arose in answer to it. We worked first on the plight of women workers and women reform movements such as the suffragettes. We also worked on a study packet that covered this whole unit of the Progressive era. I also gave a brief introduction of Theodore Roosevelt's rise to the presidency and some of his accomplishments.
