Session Summaries by History Tutors

History Tutoring review by Benjamin in Pflugerville, TX
The student and I worked on his latest homework assignment, which was a handout on continuous exponential decay.  We discussed this concept in the context of the half-life of carbon-14.  The assignment required him to use his understanding of exponential growth and decay to set up equations and solve for different variables, including the initial amount of carbon-14, the final amount of carbon-14, and the amount of time that the carbon-14 had been decaying.  When we completed the handout, we used the last couple of minutes of our session to work through a handful of other similar questions to solidify his understanding of exponential growth and decay.

Student 1and I worked on a good thesis statement for the essay topic I gave him based on the novel "Never Let Me Go". The essay question that I gave him was thought-provoking. It took Student 2 longer to write a thesis statement. I am trying to get Student 2 to dive deeper into a book and write a more in-depth essay instead of focusing on surface information.

I spent the first portion of the session assessing the students needs. Because the student was used to a different tutor, I wanted to make sure I didn't confuse her.  We covered graphing quadratics and solving and simplifying radicals. Although the session started out a little slow, by the end she had a grasp of radicals. Next session we will be focusing on topics for her final exam.

History Tutoring review by Jaclyn in Pflugerville, TX
We went over his diagnostic and corrected certain patterns of mistakes that came up across subjects. All he has to do is read questions more carefully, write more of the math out, and use his extra time in math to double-check his work. We also spent a lot of time on reading, where he tried out writing simple one-to-two word paragraph summaries and boosted his scoring.

History Tutoring review by Alonso in Pflugerville, TX
Student one- We talked about both fundamental theorems of calculus. We used the 2nd to evaluate some integrals and answer a couple of AP problems. We then looked at integrating functions using substitution. He knows how to do the calculations, so I just helped on the details and explained how to use the FTC. Student two- She just got a geometry test back that she did very well on but missed one question. It was just matching up angles. We then reviewed her homework assignment which was all about 45-45 and 30-60-90 triangles. That went alright, so I gave her some other problems that I see a lot on the SAT and ACT relating to angles.

The student is doing very well. We are especially close to the AP exam, so I am trying to cover a lot of ground in a short time. We are trying to summarize as much information as possible so that we can practice multiple choice.
