Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over the vocabulary and grammar homework assigned over break. We reviewed vocabulary for the students' quiz on Friday and practiced conjugating verbs that needed to be reviewed in the present, preterite, and imperfect tenses. We also talked about drawing connections between verbs and nouns. We looked at nouns ending in "-ma" and noted they are often masculine even though they end in "a." The first student reported that he got a "B" on his last quiz. Their homework is to work more on vocabulary. Next week he should be able to conjugate each of the verbs in the present, preterite, and imperfect tenses."
"We rehashed, corrected, and simplified the DOP and IDOP review sheet from Monday. We also covered a limited range of verbs simultaneously, focusing especially on the ser/estar distinction, as well as linked verbs and two verb reflexives. The student understands the rules concerning DOP and IDOP much better than he did at the beginning of the week. Translating and diagramming the sentences one step at a time seemed to help quite a bit."
"Today the student and I worked with conjugation of stem-changing verbs, irregular verbs, and -ar and -er verbs in the present and past tenses. We also worked on refreshing her knowledge of certain vocabulary, specifically prepositions, verbs, the seasons, and phrases that use the verb "tener." She is great at piecing sentences together in Spanish, as well as conjugating verbs in the present. She had some difficulty with vocabulary, which makes sense since she took a couple of years between Spanish 1 and 2. She has an awesome attitude and was genuinely attentive. She listens and responds well. I spoke with her about test-taking techniques, and reminded her to always go back and check over any sentence she writes in Spanish to make sure her noun-subject agreement is up to par. She should study the past conjugations of the verbs "ser" and "ir" as well as study vocabulary. I would like to see her master the meanings of the following words: VERBS: decir venir ser ir ver NOUNS: hoy dia invierno primavera verano otono todo a de a menudo siempre viaje lugar algun(os) ALL of the "question" words (donde, por que, quien...) Overall, this was a wonderful session. I really believe in her ability to catch up and even excel in her Spanish 2 performance as we continue tutoring 3 hours/week."
