The student and I met for the first time yesterday from 12-2pm at his home. After a bit of conversation and getting to know each other, we started off by reviewing his goals for tutoring, which consists of getting him set up and comfortable with his Spanish skills acquired in his previous Spanish class, so that he will have a good chance at passing/surpassing his expectations for his Spanish 104 class starting this Spring. We talked about a previous academic success of his, and how he could emulate that through hard word, preparation and dedication to his studies throughout the semester. We then got right to work reviewing what he wanted to work on most from his previous Spanish class, which included various verb tenses, grammar and vocabulary. For Saturday's session we spent the majority of our second hour reviewing the preterite tense, and its proper use versus another past verb tense, the imperfect. He was a little rusty and confused a few of the verb tense endings, but through practice and repetition he remembered their correct usage. I noticed he was a bit shy in reading aloud his responses to me, so I had him start reading aloud all the exercises we were doing to help him get comfortable again with his Spanish. This is an area I'd like to focus on with him, as building confidence in his speaking abilities will only help him feel more comfortable when he returns to class in a week. Another area we're going to need to work on is general comprehension - he read aloud a paragraph for a verb conjugation exercise, but said he only roughly understood about half of what the story meant. We went through the story word by word with him translating/summarizing what he could understand, and then we reviewed the vocab words he did not understand, which we will review again at our next session. We finished off with a summary of the preterite and a few more preterite conjugations before ending the session.

Today we began by reviewing conjugations in the present tense for all normal verbs. We also reviewed common irregular verbs. I gave the student an arsenal of many common regular, irregular, and stem changing verbs to start memorizing. After we had plenty of practice working with the present tense, I reviewed positive and negative tu commands with him. We spent the rest of our time working on regular commands and stem changing commands. Next, we are going to go over his recent Spanish quizzes, so we can fix errors that he has made in a testing situation and continue our review of commands with the irregulars.

Today the student worked on her Spanish homework packet. We went through several of the dialogue/ role playing exercises, and also worked together on a combined writing and speaking activity. The theme of the unit was shopping and clothing vocabulary. She seemed to be struggling the most with knowing how to conjugate verbs using the correct subject (I, you, he/she, we) and tense (past v. present), and remembering vocabulary words. However, she did seem to have a better understanding of how to conjugate the verbs on the vocabulary list by the end of the session. I suggested that she create flashcards for vocabulary, and also that she review the standard endings for verb conjugations in past and present, especially for the verbs on her vocabulary list. I also suggested a couple websites if she needs assistance on her own time.
