Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Hillsboro, OR Physiology tutoring
In preparation for the student's upcoming exam, we looked over her practice test which contained a variety of subjects (e.g. molecular/electron geometry, acid-base reactions, IR spectroscopy, and mass spectroscopy). While there were some concepts that she had questions about, she did not seem to be overly confused about any single subject. There were just some details missing in her understanding, which one explained made everything "click." My goal with her is to make the content more relatable. I want this to have meaning for her rather than just be lines and numbers on paper.

We covered translation of mRNA to proteins via tRNA and ribosomes. The student seemed to understand the topic well, and we cleared up some small details of ribosome movement along the mRNA transcript. We went over her lecture notes, and I had some online video animations to help solidify concepts in translation. We talked about her upcoming test and some study strategies. We also reviewed a practice exam she had taken, and she seemed to have a good grip on the material. I believe she will do well on the next exam.

I recommended that she review her diatomic molecules and purchase the solutions manual to help her when a tutor or teacher is not available.

We talked briefly about a test question that was very challenging. Then we started to work on two-dimensional motion and trajectories. I explained the technique of keeping the y variables completely separate from the x variables, and using vector decomposition to find the initial x and y velocities. The student is good at getting information out of the words in the problem (like constant velocity means acceleration is zero). He also quickly grasped the idea that the y velocity goes to zero at the peak of a trajectory.
