Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued to cover the admissions test math section. We reviewed some of the content from the previous session as we worked on covering the material included in the pre-algebra section. We paid particular attention to the fractions, ratios, and percents sections as he was struggling a bit with those. We worked through a wide variety of problems and it will be up to him to make sure that he is solidifying the material in his mind. I left him with some challenging problems for homework."
"We spent most of the session working on increasing the student's reading speed in general, using a speed-reading training process. As the student moved through the training exercises, she began to see improvement. By the end of our session, her reading speed had approximately tripled! We concluded by working through some practice tests, where the student was able to use her new-found skills."
"For the first part of the session, I modeled how I go about the process of interpreting the text. This included a background in how to read for comprehension: identify what you know, identify what you don't know, question what you don't known (and where you can find an answer), and then spend the time figuring it out (as best you can). As the session progressed, I began passing the baton back to the student, asking her to identify what she knows, what she doesn't know, and how she'd go about figuring it out. She was very determined and worked hard during this extra-long session. I encouraged her to be patient with herself, and to practice 'trying to make sense' of the text rather than 'trying to get [the text's meaning] right'. Although it is hard, she needs to learn reading comprehension strategies, practice them slowly, and then return to skimming and reading through content quickly. The next few sessions we will continue moving slowly through the text for reading comprehension, and teaching her more strategies."
