I helped the student with the various lesson plans to prepare for his exam next week on Tuesday. We did a basic review of the topics including simplifying equations, graphing equations, systems of equations, and inequalities. I helped him create a procedure to follow for solving for variables in terms of other variables. We also went over what he should be reviewing this weekend in order to prepare for his exam. We have plans to meet next week on Thursday at their home. He is making some improvements toward solving problems and his confidence is increasing. We worked on the student's problem set on linear functions, since he received new materials from his teacher at school. The problems were on three topics: graphing linear functions, finding slope of linear equations, and solving system of linear equations graphically. Since I worried that he might be blindly following recipes instead of understanding the logic, I asked his strategies in solving them and the logic behind it. He didn't realize there was strategy, but was actually using it and now knows that after I pointed it out.

For the most part, he was comfortable with the exponent rules as well as being able to apply powers to numbers without use of calculator, but he still showed some hesitance with negative exponents vs. negative coefficients. After explaining to him why the two negatives were different, he seemed more comfortable with it, but would sometimes forget. Before the end, he asked me to make him a chart with all the exponent rules and examples of each for the next session.
