Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Continued to work with the student on SAT strategy. Reviewed questions she had trouble with during self-study and worked on new sections of a practice SAT. She has improved most in the multiple choice writing, and though in the math she doesn't seem to have trouble with calculations, she still has a hard time translating word problems into equations."
"Today we started our session with a practice test on the website. Although it started off a little shaky, the student actually did very well with the test and continued to improve with the test-like material. He still has a tendency to get caught on words he is not familiar with rather than using context clues to understand the meaning of the word."
"The student is taking the December SAT and wants to bring his verbal score up about 40 points. His biggest issue is time management. So we worked on timing individual passages. His other issue is rewriting paragraphs, so we focused on correcting them before looking at the questions."
"The student and I focused on the writing section for most of the session. She is struggling with correcting sentence errors because she does not have a strong background in grammar. I also assisted her with her geometry homework, proofs about triangles. I am going to assign her with some math questions from the online homework system."
"Covered SAT writing multiple choice, essay, and math sections. The student did very well on the writing multiple choice section. Her essay was problematic mainly because she didn't include concrete evidence to support her claims. Her performance on math was satisfactory. We need to work on timing a bit. Also I think she has to adjust to the grid-ins."
"The student expressed concern with his performance on the SAT math section, particularly geometry, so we did some intensive review in this area - today we concentrated on properties of angles and specifically triangles, including shortcuts for finding the side lengths of right triangles, as well as determining area of all types of triangles (right, acute and obtuse). The student gets a bit stuck on following formulas at times and I want to assist him in building his quantitative reasoning, estimation skills, etc. so that he can better spot realistic answers from the choices given, in the case that he makes a mistake or hits a wall in his calculations. I assigned him a practice essay section to complete and scan so we can review it at our next online session."
"The student and I spent her session working on the mechanics of writing using assignments I gave her. She did very well with most of the assignments. I am going to make these assignments available to her for the next two weeks so she can practice leading up to the test."
"I worked with the student on the math test she completed from the SAT prep book which she scored 11/20. The areas I identified for extra review were on combinations, word problems involving algebra and averages, and functions involving f(g(x)). She is going to complete another practice test before we meet again this Sunday to identify areas she can improve on."
"The student asked for help with general info/test-taking strategies about the Math II subject test. He felt confident with the material and didn't feel that he needed help with any topics in particular so we just spent our time going through practice questions together, mainly trig, sequences, and polynomials of degree greater than 3."
"We went over some specific questions the student had about recent test sections he took. Then, we looked at newspaper articles and analyzed them as we would an SAT passage. We learned some new vocabulary words. His latest critical reading section score went up to a 630!"
"For this session, I had the student study for a cumulative vocab quiz, so we began with an extended vocab test. We discussed strategies for moving forward with her vocab studying, and she did say that making hand-written flash cards was helpful this time around. We then reviewed the 2 questions she got wrong on the half practice test she took before this session. Afterwards, we practiced by working through a few grammar editing passages."
"The student and I began by reviewing the practice problems he completed for homework. Next, we discussed the content areas he reviewed for homework. After this, we continued working on the math section. We completed a number of practice problems together, applying the strategies that we discussed last week, and he did very well on these. For homework, he will write a timed practice essay using the prompt in Practice Test #7 and complete all three math sections in Practice Test #7. In our next session, we will review this homework and begin working on passage-based reading."
