Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was my first session with the student. We reviewed what had been done in the class so far - the topics that he understood well and the topics that he was struggling with. We worked on two main topics, the first derivative test for finding extrema and the second derivative test for identifying the nature of critical points. Louis and struggled with these in class and so we practiced some visual and procedural methods for understanding these topics. We also reviewed taking the derivative of an exponential function. The student was a great student and was attentive to the help given. One area for improvement could be putting more of the solution steps on paper as opposed to doing everything mentally."
"The student and I covered Applications of Differentiation during our session. We looked into sketch graphs of functions based only on their derivatives. We completed most of his homework packet in review for his upcoming quiz. If the quiz is later in this week, we will meet again for a session focused solely on review. No concerns whatsoever on my part!"
"Today I reviewed both exponential functions and transformations including graphing. The student "gets" the concepts readily, and concentrated well in preparing for an exam tomorrow. I then emphasized steps in transformations of functions. We will construct a listing of "rules" for transforms and impact on graphs. We then talked about SAT tests scheduled for this weekend, especially strategies for reducing options on multiple choice."
"Today we went over more school assignments including linear equations and multiple variable worksheets. She understood how to solve the problems. She asked for some help with additional fundamental math lessons."
"Today we worked on the student's practice homework which included order of operations, mode, median, range, division, multiplication and a word problem. He understood very well. We then moved on to prime factorization which he felt like he wanted help with most. The first example I gave him he grasped well. I gave him a practice worksheet on prime factorizations of two digit numbers using the tree method. He grasped the worksheet extremely well. We will work on breaking down the tree method completely. He asked for more "mean" problems and order of operations. I left him with mean problems and some prime factorizations for extra practice."
"The student and I had a productive session today covering quadratic functions, how to graph them, and in some cases, factor them. We graphed quadratic functions in their 3 forms (standard, intercept, etc.) and vice versa. Overall, an excellent session!"
"I met the student at her home to prepare her for her exam on Tuesday. We reviewed chapter 5 from 1 through 10. I quizzed her on each unit and graded her based on her answers. I monitored her as she solved the questions I gave her and repeatedly asked her similar question in the areas. I left her with 8 problems to solve and text the solutions to me."
"Today we went over the next section of the student's homework which is categorical data. This isn't as difficult as some of the other sections, but it does require a lot of attention to detail. The specifics in this section were largely reading data from tables correctly, marginal means, conditional means, a little bit of Simpson's paradox, and a few other miscellaneous topics. He should be almost caught up with the work by the next time we meet."
"We went over a concepts and problems for a test that they will be taking soon. The student did really well today. She had made progress and seemed to remember everything from our previous sessions. The second student asked for help on a couple of types of problems. Once I showed her how to solve a certain kind of problem she could do any of those kinds of problems I threw at her. I took a copy of the test that we went over today, and I am going to keep track of the things that she remembers for next week."
"Studied for math test on units of measurement. Began with reviewing all conversions and taking note of which were hard to remember. She had a good grasp of all the units and could identify which should be used to measure items of various scales. She also seemed to understand that converting metric units requires just moving decimal places. She had some trouble doing problems that involved adding and subtracting non-metric quantities, but she seemed to have a better handle on it by the end of the session."
"The student and I reviewed worksheets from the past week that she said she had a little difficulty with and we also practiced the multiplication tables. I think she is doing very well and has made excellent progress."
"It was my first session with the student, so we covered functions, in particular, how to interpret functions along with some graphing of functions. We completed several practice problems from the math website dealing with functions. My goal is to review upcoming material with him so that he is prepared and understands concepts before he sees them in the classroom. I have introduced the math website to the student for additional practice problems that he can complete on his own to make sure he is prepared for upcoming lessons. We had a good session."
