How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

If your child is getting ready to take the High School Placement Test, also known as the HSPT, you want them to be as prepared as possible. But maybe they struggle in one of the core subjects they will be tested on, such as math. Or perhaps they are just nervous test takers in general. Rather than rely on a test prep book to help them, give them a personalized option like their very own tutor. Let Varsity tutors find your child an HSPT tutor in Hialeah, FL, who will understand their needs and offer positive reinforcement to try to make the learning process easier.

The HSPT focuses on language, math, quantitative skills, reading, and verbal skills. The test is required for many private and religious schools, and is often administered in the spring and fall. Students can score anywhere from 200-800 on the test, and it is given to them in the eighth grade. We could help you and your child find a professional tutor in Hialeah to help them build upon their strengths and eliminate their weaknesses on the HSPT. If your child needs to focus on building up their math skills, the tutor can make sure that is the primary area they focus on during their sessions. If you feel they would benefit more from covering everything they will be tested on, the tutor can see to it that they spend an equal amount of time on all subjects. Whatever your child needs to succeed, the tutor is more than happy to assist with.

Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

Hialeah, FL HSPT tutoring
The student and I did logic and scrambled paragraphs for the first half of our session. He has really improved in logic. He now knows to assume nothing and is good at setting up the problems. Scrambled paragraphs are going well as well. He did make a couple of mistakes but was able to correct them himself. We spent the last hour doing math.

Today the student and I continued working on the English sections of the exam. After a brief review of some word arithmetic, we went over some of the test-yourself sections that she had done over the week. Afterwards, we went over some strategies for the reading comprehension section and did a few practice sections. We finished the session with another practice English section. For next week, she will do the math diagnostic.

Today was our first meeting and it went very well. After talking about her comfortability and knowledge of the exam we dove into the math section. She is a great student who just needs to drill many of these concepts, some of which she hasn't done for a couple years. We went through a whole test of math problems and she seemed comfortable with most of them. They other 20% we worked out together and we will focus on those again in our next session. Also during our next session, we'll start working on English. Her test is October 26th so my goal is to make sure she is as comfortable as she can be with the test and the basic concepts from each section.

When the student is being tutored, she is actively engaged and gives the work full attention. I gave her a sheet of common formulas on the exam that we are going to add to as we go. We covered some basics of trigonometry (soh-cah-toa and graphing of sin/cos waves) and worked on reviewing some of the trickier concepts from college algebra.

We scored and reviewed the student's third full-length practice exam. He got a nearly perfect score on the math sections and did well on the synonyms and reasonably well on the reading comprehension and analogies. We will do a test strategies review and some more work on verbal analogies on Thursday.

The student and I continued working on problems from practice tests. Some concepts we dealt with in particular were interest and formulas for it, binomial squares, what makes something defined, graphs of inequalities, and the concept of absolute value. Tonight I will send him some practice problems for him to complete before our session Wednesday. He continues to be engaged and focused and great to work with.
