Session Summaries by SAT Math Tutors

Hendersonville, TN SAT Math tutoring
The student made some big gains in these sessions! Yesterday, for 2 hours, we tackled the two most important strategies for her: plugging in the answers (PITA) and plugging in your own answers. This is a strategy that can be used throughout the math section of the SAT to overcome algebra issues, not knowing where to start, and time management issues. We went through 5 full examples of both types, with her gradually taking on more of the responsibility for demonstrating mastery of the concepts. I left her practice problems from our first session to complete and have for our next session. Today, we completed what we were not able to get through and practiced until I saw good mastery of the plugging in strategies.

This student is by far the smartest and brightest student I have had the pleasure tutoring. She will go far in life. We went through a practice SAT test and the only thing she does not know are things she has not yet learned. We went over imaginary numbers and logarithm rules. The only concern I have for her is overconfidence, and she tends to ignore small details that can lead to the wrong answers. We will continue to work on this next session.

This week the student and I took an in-depth look at some algebra problems that were giving her trouble from the homework I gave her last time. I identified several specific SAT math concepts that she needs a lot more practice in, like division of a polynomial (for example, (24x^4 - 36x^3 + 12x^2)/(12x^2)), and algebra problems involving exponent rules (for example, solve for k in terms of x if x=k^(-1/3)). She can theoretically understand each problem when I walk through it step-by-step with her, but she needs a lot of practice so that she can solve these problems (which are common on the SAT) on her own and efficiently. I believe she is capable of this, and I will be sending her some homework this week.

This week, we went over solving math problems using the plug and chug and backtracking methods. The student found these topics just fine, and there wasn't too much difficulty. I left the student with hw to go over the concepts, and some time in the future, I will give him a practice exam as per request. Overall, it was a decent session, and we will be transitioning into word problems next time.

Today the student and I began by reviewing problems that he had questions about on the diagnostic exam he took before the session. Following this, we worked through several more diagnostic problems and determined that we will be focusing heavily on trigonometry in our upcoming sessions. He performs calculations well, but there are a few subject areas that he has not seen before. We will continue to work on this next session.

Today was our first test preparation session, so we discussed the differences between the old test and the new, what to expect, and the plan we were putting in place. The students covered the first 3 chapters in the workbook very quickly and showed excellent progress! They were left with homework assignments to continue reviewing Algebra I material before our next meetings.
