The student and I focused on the past tense: preterite and imperfect, the difference between the to-be verbs ser and estar. I offered many examples of when to use the preterite and when to be more imperfect and gave her the chance to use both in describing her past and a hypothetical past. We also talked about using estar for emotions and descriptions of place. Given that appropriate usage of the preterite and imperfect can take up to months or even a semester in a beginner/ intermediate Spanish classroom, we will have to return to the past at a future time.

The student and I reviewed her vocabulary homework to start. After reviewing the work she had done independently, we worked through her remaining practice problems. We finished by doing a spelling and definition recall quiz, which she passed. If she reviews once or twice more before her make up test, I'm confident she can do well! Next, we focused on math. Similar to before, we started by reviewing the multiplication homework she had done independently, and then worked on the new homework. She still needs help becoming more comfortable with integers, specifically absolute values, adding and subtracting negative numbers, and clearly showing her work for credit. These are all things we can work towards improving in our coming sessions.

We reviewed affirmative commands, both regular and irregular. We went over the negative commands, how to form them and when to use them. We went over adding direct object pronouns to both negative and affirmative commands. We worked on this grammar with both oral and written practice. The student definitely made progress with this and was able to use the correct form of the verb with more fluidity as the session progressed. For extra practice, I had the student form sentences using both affirmative and negative commands.
