How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

The Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) is a standardized test that is utilized by many private schools as a part of their admissions process. The SSAT is broken down into three different levels. These include an elementary level, a middle level, and an upper level. The elementary level is available to students in grades three and four. The middle level can be taken by students in grades five through seven. Finally, the upper level is offered to students in grades eight and above.

The SSAT is divided into four sections, including verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, quantitative, and an essay. The verbal reasoning section covers vocabulary and analogy. The reading comprehension section requires students to answer questions about reading passages. The quantitative section focuses on properties, operations, algebra and functions, measurement and probability, and geometry and spatial sense. Finally, the essay section requires students to write an essay.

Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

Henderson, NV SSAT tutoring
We went over a fictional reading passage and spent an hour dissecting it. We looked at the answers the student got right and those he got wrong, and I shared with him strategies on how to arrive at the right answer on similar tough questions. We did one example of a language and writing sample and then did another verbal example. As his first SAT test will be in early March, we have decided it would be best for the next two sessions to focus mainly on fictional pieces and also to work on his essay writing. He did a great job today.

Today, the student and I shifted our focus to actual test taking. After several weeks of math, I wanted to see how his reading and writing skills were holding up. He performed strongly in both sections and finished with plenty of time to spare. There were a few minor missteps, but he's in a good position. Math continues to be our emphasis, but he improves every time out. He took a no-calculator section on his own and did fairly well. He missed a few questions that he should have gotten, but he also successfully tackled some of the more difficult problems. After going through a longer math section together, I left him with several online exercises and a shortened practice tests that he can do on his own.

We covered the student's Reading/Writing practice test. She should return next week having completed the math (in the time allotted!) and corrected all sections. We'll review, revise personal test-taking strategies, and continue with a timed math practice.

The student and I reviewed basic stoichiometry and limiting reagents. We worked on several examples, starting with simple molar stoichiometry to find the limiting reactant, into advanced setups which required converting from mass of reactants to their moles, then calculating mass of products and the amount of excess reactant. Then, we learned molarity and how to determine molarity based on mass of solute and volume of a solvent/ solution. I assigned her some homework related to limiting reagent.

We went over 2/3 of all concepts in math of the SAT. The student was smart and passionate. She struggled with ratios and setting equations for wording problems. We will continue to work on that. She was very interested in learning more/ deeply. I taught her process of elimination in order to shorten the time spent on solving the questions. I gave her homework as well.

We worked on setting up equations and solving systems of equations. We then worked on critical reading skills. We refreshed on first- vs third-person and looked at main ideas of passages. Finally, we started working on some more vocab. We did a variety of questions from fill-in-the-blank to more context-based questions. The student does better with context-based questions, but she is improving at identifying correct vocab using critical reasoning when she doesn't know the word. After our next appointment this week, she is going to try another diagnostic test to see how she feels with the various subjects that will be on the SAT.
