We worked on all three sections. We're still working through some of the easier math problems, so I want to keep spending more time on math than the others to make sure we cover everything before the test. Also, the student has improved dramatically in reading. She's getting really comfortable with looking to the exact line in the text that supports the answer, and eliminating all the others.

We spent this session reviewing the student's scores from the SAT she took in March. Since she did not do as well on the math section as she had hoped, we went through some math practice problems and reviewed test-taking strategies for the math section. She is in the midst of preparing for AP exams, but I encouraged to do a little practice each day leading up to the SAT in June.

Today I first addressed the student's questions from his homework. We reviewed solving problems with proportions and similar figures. We then worked on the chapter dealing with percents. He learned to convert from percent to decimal to fraction form. He also learned how to solve percent problems using proportions.

The student did really well in tutoring. I had him read the prompt for and outline an essay, which he completed in time. I drilled him pretty hard in reading comprehension (we did three short passages where he read and summarized the important points to me, and two longer SAT passages with questions). On one of the SAT passages, he got 100% of the questions correct! On the other SAT passage he only got 6/10 questions correct, but it was one of the more difficult scientific passages that he struggles with (and he is getting better at those). Right now he is hovering around 70%-80% accuracy when answering multiple-choice questions, which is pretty good. I have only been drilling him on small bits at a time, so he definitely needs to do a few full length tests.

The student and I looked at a variety of resources that covered the SAT Writing prompts and how they are scored. We used MLK Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech as an example prompt for the argument essay and we utilized writing formulas to quickly build a 5-paragraph essay. After working on essay structure we spent the remaining half-hour working on visual text and "writing and language" practice problems. We discussed strategies that the student can use to answer questions correctly. The student will read an example SAT Prompt and example essay as well as construct his own SAT essay for us to review during out next session. He will also take a diagnostic test on Tuesday so that we may review the results and his progress before his test this weekend. I am seeing LOTS of progress in the student's test-taking skills. At times he does not say that he is confident, but I am trying to be positive and optimistic of his progress.

The student and I worked on the SAT essay today. We looked at one of the SAT essay prompts on the website. First, we read the prompt. Then I had her read the passage, which should take about 5-10 minutes. She finished it in plenty of time. Then I had her plan her essay by looking for the specific elements in the passage that the prompt asked about: facts, reasoning, and emotional appeal. We each made lists of these elements that we found in the passage, and compared them. We talked about what the subject should be of each of her body paragraphs. Finally, I gave her some time to work on writing the essay itself. At the end of the session, I asked her to finish it on her own time, take a picture of the essay, and email it to me. That way I'll be able to evaluate it and give her feedback at our next session on Thursday.
