How can a tutor help you master the SAT?

The SAT is one of the factors that is used by many colleges and universities as a part of their undergraduate admissions process. It is made up of three sections, including the critical reading section, the math section, and the essay section.

The critical reading section focuses on analysis in history and science, words in context, and command of evidence. It also offers both informational and literary texts. Informational texts consist of founding documents, social science, and science. Literary texts involve works of fiction from around the world and in the United States.

The student and I went over a no-calculator portion of a practice test, and I timed him so that he got a sense of how quick the section is. We talked about how best to use the time -- it's designed to be pretty impossible to get through all the problems, so we discussed him looking over his remaining problems, once he has 10 minutes left, and picking and choosing which ones he wants to tackle (since the most difficult ones come at the end). We did a mini-lesson on multiplying by inverses/ conjugates at the end of the session. I'll send him some practice problems to complete for Saturday.

We finished up the reading practice test from the SAT book. The student does really well with reading comprehension overall. We then did the math practice tests from the book. He did really well on the non-calculator section. Some particular areas to focus on moving forward are more work with exponents, some work with circle equations, and questions about mass and density of objects. We will finish the math test next session, and do the writing practice test.

We reviewed the three readings I asked the student to complete for today. He remembered most of the content. However, he needed a bit of prodding to some critical thinking about how the pieces functioned rhetorically. His essay was good. One of the points was weaker than the other, so we spent some time discussing how he could improve it. We also did an exhaustive grammar review, doing multiple-choice questions focusing on nine of the biggest grammar topics (e.g. subject-verb agreement, capitalization, etc.). His accuracy was around 95%. For next time, I asked him to complete the final practice SAT.

We shifted our focus to the SAT, although the approaches and tools given to the student during the ACT still apply. We focused mainly on the critical reading section by going over the incorrect answers on the 10th diagnostic test. The student seemed to be struggling the most with large theme and authorial intent questions. One strategy for this is to pay close attention to key words and phrases within the passage that suggest positive or negative connotations and narrator point of view.

Today, the student and I ran through the first few sections of an SAT practice test. He performed much better than he had on similar tests in the past. He still sometimes barks up the wrong tree in terms of reading comprehension answer choices, but definitely less often. He is starting to isolate the important and relevant information. In math and writing, he did very well. I assigned him the rest of the test for next week.

The student did another full length practice test and was able to increase her score significantly. She still needs to raise it more to get her ideal score, but she is well on her way. She decided to extend the time until she takes the exam until June so we have more time. We went over the math she had done, and I assigned her to take more math practice as that was one area that we wanted to focus on more. As we were going over them we noticed that she mostly was moving too quickly, and once we went over the questions again, she was able to answer them correctly.
