Session Summaries by LSAT Tutors

Henderson, NV LSAT tutoring
We went over rate and work problems and then did a high-level review of all the concepts that we have talked about over the last month. Her knowledge and understanding of the GRE's math concepts has definitely improved, and she has a pretty complete picture of the test and its topics. Speed seems to be the limiting factor. She just needs a little time to mentally digest.

We covered a lot of content today. We finished plane geometry, and made it through solid geometry very quickly. He already had a comfortable knowledge of statistics, and probability made sense to him, and we just covered the first bit of Venn diagrams, putting us about an hour ahead of schedule. We discussed his challenges, and have decided to use most of next appointment practicing and reviewing algebra topics, so that he feels better in that material. I will send him a second diagnostic test which he will do over the weekend, and we'll use our last appointment on Monday to go over his results and fill in any last minute gaps, and do a little bit of review.

We focused on working through geometry practice problems, solving angle measure, area, and surface area and volume problems. I recommended the student write out her formula summary sheet(s) she is studying, in addition to working problems, to best fit her kinesthetic learning style. She will take a timed practice exam this weekend and show me the results of the exam so that we can discuss optimizing her test-taking strategies.

Today the student reviewed some problem solving strategies for the GRE math section. We practiced several quantitative comparison questions, and practiced when to plug in vs. when to simplify algebraically (or arithmetically). In the last part of our session, we focused on translating word problems into problems we could solve by plugging in. We started with the middle answer choice, plugged that in to find x (if x wasn't the answer choice), then used logic to determine the correct direction to move such that we get closer to the correct answer. We also reviewed when we could eliminate wrong answer choices, and learned today that if the two quantities are both positive, we can multiply or divide on both sides to help simplify. Next time, we will continue reviewing test taking strategies and work through some tricky practice problems, including probability.

The student has a month left until the exam. She got the same score on her last practice test as her first actual GRE, which is encouraging because it means she is back up to level and still has time to keep studying to get those extra points. We spent our time reviewing the questions she got wrong in her practice test in addition to two practice sections. I would say a third to half of the wrong questions she was capable of doing with minimal issues. It was a good reminder to make sure to read the questions fully to make sure you are solving for the correct answer. One topic area that we agreed to review in more depth are questions that use symbols to denote equations. She will do another practice test before we meet next.

We discussed probabilities (including Venn diagrams and independent and mutually exclusive events, etc.) and techniques for solving geometry problems. Now that we've covered a lot of subjects, I think that what will benefit the student the most is practice. It is important that she work out any kinks in her math mechanics between now and the test date. Next session, we'll switch gears a little and work on the writing section.
