Session Summaries by English Grammar and Syntax Tutors

The first student and I worked through some homework problems in her grammar workbook. The focus was subject-verb agreement, there is/there are, and intervening phrases. For the most part, she knew which choice was correct based on how it sounded when she said each option out loud. She made a few common mistakes and we reviewed those by simplifying each sentence and testing the answer choices again. I spent the last hour working with the other student on an essay assignment. She is reading Frankenstein and needed to pick a theme in the book for her essay. She chose revenge. We discussed the times where people in the book felt vengeful and acted on their feelings. We also discussed why revenge is an important theme. This led to a new topic, "What does it mean to be a monster?" I talked her through a rough outline and we began to identify appropriate quotes for her body paragraphs. By the end of the session, she felt much more confident in her essay topic and was happy with the structure. I told her not to be afraid to let her focus change slightly as she fills out her outline and refines her thesis. She had the difficult task of beginning her paper before she finished the book, and as she reads on, she may have new ideas.

The student's latest assignment will be about an environmentally significant issue that might need regulation. He's to co-ordinate with 3 other students, to prepare for a class debate, and wants to consider GMOs. We reviewed possible sources of information. We then took a few minutes to discuss computer terminology and the basics of how memory and storage relate to the microprocessor, the various kinds of interfaces to run peripherals, etc. Lastly, we cited how language needs to be factual and clear to the reader/audience, and how rhetorical selections/decisions can affect their support or opposition to an issue.

The student and I started with 'King of Shadows', spending about 45 minutes on reading comprehension and the overall story development. We drew another character map, and for homework, I want him to redraw it a little larger on one page, so it's by itself. One idea is to print out stock photos to represent the boys and assign them the characters' names - this way, he has the visual in front of him. I could tell he enjoyed watching 'The Outsiders' movie as he was reading the book, since it allowed him to visualize the characters as he's seen in the movie. Since that's not always going to be the case, we'll need to work more on visualization. We then spent the other 45 minutes with Keats' "Bright Star". He had minor vocabulary questions, and I really liked how he color-coded everything depending on if he didn't know the definition, and/or if it was part of the rhyming scheme. We first reviewed each word he didn't know, looking at the synonyms and definition. We then added a text box (and I made him write this by hand) of the poem without jargon, using the literal definition. For homework, I also assigned him to read and save "To-" by Keats- we can work on this next week. I'm thinking this will probably be our last week on historical romantic poetry; I want to bring in ee cummings next.

Together, the student and I explored a huge repository of folk tales online. We took turns picking and reading aloud. I encouraged him to keep going on his own, because these folktales from around the world have plenty to teach him about culture. I also feel that the varying lengths of the tales and the peculiarity of the less familiar ones will entice him to read more. We went over his new essay assignment and I went over his new vocab words. His homework is to keep reading and to think over the assignment. His writing homework is to create fresh sentences with the new words. I am going to test him with a tough exercise on Friday.

Great session with the student. He worked on an essay for his religion class, focusing on the impacts of one's faith on responses to suffering. Particularly paid attention to developing a strong thesis and keeping a clear structure between paragraphs.
