The student and I reviewed for an upcoming test in Global on the Russian Revolution(s), and communism. We went over key themes, concepts and terms. I had him write notes on the key ideas, and we reviewed them and discussed them at length. He should do very well on the exam. I left a dB essay for him to review and to complete the documents for our next session on Monday.

The student had emailed me her homework assignment the night before this session, as it was due on Wednesday. I reviewed it and gave her my comments that same night, as it was due the morning before our session on Wednesday. We started by discussing the notations I gave and making sure she understood them. She and I continued by reviewing the poetry assignment she had reviewed for her homework two sessions ago. After annotating the passage as we discussed, she had corrected three of her answers, giving her a perfect score. I stressed with her the importance of annotating and how much it had improved her reading comprehension. We went over three more practice tests, each with longer passages. The student used the strategies that we went over last time, including reading the questions/answers first before reviewing the passage and annotating while reading. Her comprehension was markedly improved and she had 12/13 questions correct. The remaining question was only wrong because of a lack of vocabulary, but when I suggested she examine the word and look for the Latin root, she immediately understood its meaning and recognized it as the right answer. I was very pleased with her improvement.

Keeping with the goal of getting the student ready for her SAT exam in a week, we looked at more essay prompts that she responded to. My focus remains on getting her to adequately develop the ability to quickly pinpoint a point of argument and substantiate with credible examples. I have seen a lot of progress in this area since our very first session.

The student had a research paper assigned to her from one of her classes that was a little tricky to start: analyzing a historical speech. We had a lot of fun working on it together, though, and she is very talented in her ability to analyze. I believe we completed most of it, though I did assure her we could continue in dialogue about it throughout the weekend.

The student introduced me to the paper that he was assigned to write. He was tasked with choosing a short story to compare with A Winters Blood. He gave me a synopsis of the book, and we went over the short story choices, choosing Brokeback Mountain. He and I then brainstormed how the paper should be approached and the format of the paper. We decided on comparing the literature's use of isolation and contrasting the way in which isolation is achieved by each character (physical, mental, alcoholism, love). We broke down what each paragraph needed to contain and he found text to support his thesis.

I tried to get a sense of where the student is, so I brought several worksheets. We did a grammar worksheet that focused on commas, and he had some errors but overall seemed pretty solid with it. We did some analogy/vocab work with vocabulary words (e.g. short:tall::sad:happy). He understood the concept of the work but didn't know some of the words. I made a list of words he didn't know and for extra/optional work for next week and told him to make sentences with them. That is something we can start with next week too. We also did SAT level sentence completions, and again there were a lot or words he didn't know. Building vocabulary will definitely be a priority, some work with challenging SAT level words is okay, and I'd like to find some practice problems that are a little easier as well. We also talked about essays, and he is going to bring in some school work next time. For his history class he has to write informal one-page responses to articles, and I'd like to go over some of the old ones and/or work together on a new one. He also was recently assigned an essay that we can work together on. Once I see some of his written work I'll have a better idea of how his organization, sentence structure, etc. is. Going forward we will meet at 4:30, in addition to every-other/occasional Saturdays.
