He did an excellent job, although there were spelling mistakes. We discussed the more glaring ones. Then he did a reading comprehension exercise on woodpeckers, which he read very well. For Wednesday, I asked him to finish the chapter and also complete a reading comprehension exercise on raisins, including looking up definitions of words he doesn't know and writing them on the back.

I would ask him to say each sentence he was thinking aloud, then write them, and finally, I would go over it with him to look for any mistakes. After doing the introductory paragraph, I helped him do a preemptive outline/sketch of the story. Along the way, we reviewed certain spelling tricks and grammar as it came up. Next session, we will try to finish the story we started tonight.

We did this a few times, and also maintained a spelling list throughout the session.
