Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, I continued to work with the student on the analysis of the short story "Everyday Use". She came prepared to the session with a working thesis for her research paper. She had the right idea with her thesis, but her argument was too vague. At the time of our session, she had not yet acquired her sources. We discussed the kind of sources she might collect in the library and how to make sure her sources support, strengthen, and add depth to her argument. She should not look toward secondary sources for her argument. She exhibited an apt understanding of this concept. She did, however, still feel a bit lost as to what Walker's story is ultimately saying about African American heritage. I encouraged her to identify shifts in the narrative in order to help her gain a better understanding of what exactly Walker's message is about African American heritage. Again, she was engaged during our entire session. She truly cares about learning and improving her close reading and writing skills through diligence and hard work. I look forward to seeing the progress she's made next session. We also discussed the importance of reading as often as possible in her free time in order to improve her reading comprehension abilities."
"Student and I worked together to analyze a public meme -- in this case, a sign in the nearby coffee shop. After analyzing its context and content, she recorded her analysis in a one-page written response. She's getting better at identifying multiple levels of meaning when analyzing arguments."
"We worked on revising her essay. It was missing a couple of concepts from the prompt, so she made sure to add those in!"
