Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Because this was the student's last session before her test date, we reviewed section-specific strategies for all three of the PSAT section types and went over general test-day tips. We began by reviewing and practicing the three main approaches to reading passages in the Critical Reading sections that we had explored in previous sessions, and noting which techniques were better- or worse-suited for which types of passages. We also refreshed our previous work on dealing with paired reading passages. From there, we went on to recap the test-taking strategies we had previously practiced for the Math section, with particular emphasis on the Student-Generated Response questions, and for each of the three subsections of the Writing section. Finally, we went over general test-day recommendations: how to minimize (or bounce back from) stress, frustration, and distractions or test fatigue, what 'a good breakfast' for a lengthy test should include (in general terms), and what to expect in terms of test pacing and breaks. It's been a joy working with the student, and I wish her the very best on her PSAT this week!"
"We worked through more geometry today. She learned some geometry theorems to help solve problems. We went through this a few times and her confidence grew. She still needs more practice in the Pythagorean Theorem and distance formula, so I will be sending her problems to work on these. Next time, we are going to continue in geometry and also do some algebra review."
"The student's father asked that I administer a PSAT so we could get a base line. He did very well on the passages on the PSAT but had some surprising issues with vocabulary. It's only a baseline and is part of the overall plan that we are setting up to help the student succeed academically."
