Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For our second meeting, the student and I reviewed her first assignment. I asked her to write a fun autobiography. We went through and corrected her spelling and grammatical mistakes. I think she has potential to write well, she just needs to push the boundaries a little!"
"The student and I went over the June test that she ordered from the ACT company. We also discussed focusing on science and reading in preparation for the next test. We are going to continue practicing the reading strategies we worked on before the last test, and we will work on improving his pacing on the science section. We will meet next on Saturday the 18th from 12-2."
"For this session, we did a comprehensive practice on each aspect of the exam. We spent much of our time on verbal skills (synonyms, sentence completion, and vocabulary) as well as reading comprehension. Although she is much stronger in these subjects than with math and quantitative reasoning, I will have to reinforce tips for succeeding in these sections. The student was attentive and enjoyed reviewing these subjects and as always, was eager to write another essay for me to review during the next tutoring session."
"The student and I began a discussion of the nervous system. We went through the divisions of this system and what each of these divisions means. We also studied the parts of a neuron and the supporting cells in the nervous system. Lastly, we began discussing the transmembrane potential and the electrochemical gradient that creates this potential."
"Today, we went over the diagnostic test that the student took. I see that he has strengths in math and weakness in vocabulary. For him, I think in terms of math, the most important part is just learning how to answer unfamiliar questions by applying things he already knows. For example, he knows the area of a circle, and the area of a square, but hesitates when finding the area made by inscribing a circle within a square. In terms of vocabulary, there is a lot of work that needs to be done, and he needs to focus. He has made it clear that he has a hectic schedule, but I have encouraged him to study his vocabulary, and continue to take practice tests. I have assigned a full length practice test for next week, along with 100 vocabulary words from my prep test vocabulary list. He needs to build up his vocabulary quickly, because it affects every part of the verbal sections, except for reading comprehension."
"We worked on his previous quiz and tests that dealt with like and unlike terms, taxes, commissions, percentage, and proportions."
"Today the student had to study for an upcoming vocabulary test, for which we reviewed several times until I was certain he understood not only the definition but also proper usage of each word. Then we brainstormed how he could construct his flower model for science class, and we came up with a basic diagram that clearly delineated materials needed and general construction guidelines. Finally, we worked on Social Studies, where we discussed Constantinople. He seems to be improving his historical analysis with every session."
"Read "Buenas Noches a Todos" and began reading "Diario de Greg". Watched "Pikachu" in Spanish. Talked about flags of countries and states, and practiced with "que es esso" using objects in the room and colors."
"First session with the student. We worked through some of his assigned chemistry homework (stoichiometry) for which he has an exam this week and also answered some questions regarding trig functions for which he also has an exam this week."
"We talked about what the student found challenging when she took the SAT in November. Based on this, we mainly focused on writing multiple choice and reading sections. We discussed specific grammatical principles (to be expanded on in future sessions) as well as overall test-taking strategies."
"The student practiced a second section of an SAT under timed conditions, and we discovered that she needs more practice on getting through the grid-ins quickly. This week she will practice another grid-in section timed and we will work on it again next Saturday."
"Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation. I requested they take screenshots of some of the worksheet so I can create tutorials explaining how to decide what sorts of variables to plot. We discussed strategies for test taking. The student is going to try to find examples of last years tests."
