Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, the student and I worked on her language and literature homework. We covered new vocabulary words as well as the comparative and superlative use of adjectives and adverbs."
"Today the student worked on a paper due in her English class on the Great Gatsby, focusing on the use of detail and diction in the novel to analyze character development."
"Today the student and I worked on all three portions of the eighth grade ELA exam. We began with multiple choice and read two stories, one fictional and one informational. He is doing considerably better in multiple choice, receiving 7/8 both times. It is very important that he reread the answer choices (especially the one he selected) twice before moving on. In both stories, as soon as he locked in his answer, he realized it was wrong. We also worked on an essay and writing body paragraphs. It is extremely important that he outline (even briefly) before writing so he addresses all aspects of the task. Today we worked on a prompt that wanted the student to say how rhythm, rhyme, and repetition effected the text. He could easily come up with examples but it was difficult for him to discuss the effect they had on the text itself. The last thing we did was work on short answers. We used the RACE acronym to write and this will make sure he receives full credit on all short answers."
"For our first session, the student and I were introduced, and I began getting to know him and where he felt like he was struggling when it came to reading and answering questions in preparation for the assessment exam. He told me that while he sort of understood what he was reading, he felt like he wasn't understanding what some of the questions were asking him. During the session, I asked him to read through one literary passage and answer the following questions with a set time limit. I was able to ascertain that he has difficulty with understanding words in context as well, but seemed to be able to gather the main idea of a passage. We will continue to work on this."
"For our first session, the student and I worked with the first book in the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope-Osborne. She enjoyed the book, and we read a good amount (6 chapters). She also completed two separate reading comprehension worksheets as well as two worksheets that required her to write a couple of sentences. I look forward to continue working with her."
"For our last session until next year, I worked with the student on a quick write. He then had to choose three words and create his own sentences with context clues. We also went over his grammar homework from last session. Finally, we ended the session with a free write about his favorite thing to do at home. I gave him five words that he had to use, and when he was finished, we went over the corrections together."
