The student and I continued to work on the linear regression statistics today. Specifically, we practiced proving all of the linear conditions for linear regression, by using scatterplots and histograms of the residuals in the calculator.

We reviewed the general process of solving an inference problem. We practiced setting up the null and alternative hypotheses, and discussed how to treat one- and two-sided tests differently. We also reviewed how to perform tests on two samples rather than one.

Today the student and I continued our review of all material leading up to the final. He has been doing practice problems in preparation for the exam, and we spent our time going over areas where he had questions. He found out that one of the tables he used heavily in his homework won't be available for his exam, so we went over how to compute the values in that table by hand, which gave us an opportunity to go over advanced functions he'll need on his calculator as well.

We covered problem 29 (about student admission) in the text that we had tabled last week, as well as problem 42 (about credit cards) from the Bayes' theorem section. We spent a lot of time explaining Bayes' theorem and how to choose a formula based on the information available from the text. Question 44 is homework - it uses the same Bayes' theorem setup as question 42.

The student has a quiz coming up on Wednesday, so during this lesson, we prepared the class material that her professor has so far covered, that she expects will be on the quiz. The main topic was regression and correlation. We went into detail about such topics as expected and unexpected variance, the coefficients of determination and non-determination, the meaning of the slope and y-intercept of a regression line, zy=rzx, and the relationships between Pearson's r and standard deviations. The student did a great job working through both practice problems and the conceptual material from the book. She has a bit more to cover in class before the quiz. For our next lesson, we plan to go over her next project, due later in the week. She continues to make excellent progress and stay on top of this course, and she's gaining an excellent mastery of introductory statistics for social sciences.

We focused on reviewing for the student's test that she had the following day, which covered confidence intervals for the mean with known and unknown population standard deviation, confidence interval and sample size for proportion, and confidence intervals for variance and standard deviation. We worked the problems on the test review sheet and went through her class notes. She was working on keeping straight the symbols used in statistics notation, knowing what values should be used for each formula, and knowing when to apply a certain formula in a word problem. It seemed she understood most of the content on the review sheet.
