Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Hartford, CT Reading tutoring
In our first session, the student and I set goals for tutoring. I then shared with him a reading list, which he will pick a book from for us to read over the next couple of weeks. I also shared with him a vocabulary list, which he will make flashcards for and I will quiz on weekly. For the remainder of the session, we practiced sentence completion questions similar to those on the SAT to prepare for his police academy exam. I shared strategies to break down these longer questions and solve with higher accuracy.

Today, both students did practice with the rules of capitalization and worked along with me on a reading comprehension passage. Student A played a grammar game that helped her practice the correct spelling of homophones (words that sound exactly the same, but have different meanings). She also worked on arithmetic with positive and negative integers and absolute value. She has a literary assignment on interpreting poetic writing. Student B has an assignment on paraphrasing to do for homework.

We began our session by talking about what the student is currently doing in his classes. Then we did a few practice problems on addition/subtraction of regular fractions with same denominator, same with different denominators, same with mixed numbers, and same with improper fractions. Then we did a few practice problems with multiplication and long division. He has a very strong grasp of these concepts. We read a single sheet story with some comprehension questions on the back. Reading will be a primary focus of our future sessions.

Tonight we covered more practice using reading comprehension skills and looking for details in the story that support answers to the questions. We also worked on summarizing. The student read a short passage about different kinds of rocks and then we began answering the questions who, what, where, when, why, and how, in order to make a short summary of the passage. He did well but need lots of guidance while going back to find the answer to each of the questions. Many times he is too quick to go through his work just to get done so, I am having to remind him of the importance of writing in complete sentences. Repetition seems to be the key to helping him stay on track.

I discussed the independent reading program that the student is using at his middle school. I administered a preliminary comprehension assessment based on state standards. He has excellent comprehension skills, but does read rather slowly and apparently struggles with long-term retention. I mapped out a manageable list of reading assignments for him to complete during the week. Next week, we will begin a reading log and practice annotation strategies.

I sat down with the student and asked her which book she would like to begin with as usual. She selected "How Rocket Learned How to Read." This is about a 2.5 reading level, about the same as "Green Eggs and Ham," which she had some success a couple of weeks ago. I helped her read through the first page, then she started having trouble and we read a book that was a lower level which she had good success with.
