Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

The student and I went over a recent exam from her ECE 319 course. We covered shielding, mutual inductance, dBm to voltage conversion, and electrical length calculation. The challenge for the mutual inductance problem was knowing to use the mutual inductance per meter to find the total mutual inductance between the two transmission lines. For the dB to voltage conversion, there was small unit conversion (mW to W) error that was overlooked. Once corrected, the correct voltage value was found. She and I discussed the concept of a wire's electrical length. Electrical length defines the size of a wire (in terms of wavelength) based on the operating wavelength and the wire length. She is showing improvement when it comes to dB math problems, and does a good job choosing the formulas to use if it's a type of problem she has completed before. Next time we will go over practice problems in preparation for a quiz next Tuesday.

This session focused on the definition of work and the work-kinetic energy theorem. We walked through several examples from the student's class, then discussed several invented situations dealing with work to help hone her understanding of work as a function of force and distance and its relation to kinetic energy. She also asked about Hook's law, so we discussed work in relation to spring energy and the integration techniques necessary to calculate kinetic energy of springs. We ended the session with a practice problem involving forces, work, and power which she successfully solved without assistance.

I went over density problems with the student. He seemed to have problems manipulating equations and units to making the right conversions. We worked on practice problems regarding these two concepts and he did well with them. I felt that he made improvements on unit conversions, which are crucial in chemistry, and this will be helpful for him in the future. He seems to have a good base understanding and this is encouraging.

The student and I went over periodic trends, naming of compounds, as well as oxidation/reduction concepts. She only needed some clarification on these topics as she was very knowledgeable about them. Once I explained the concepts to her, she was able to complete her questions with little input from me. I suggest that she continue to review her notes in order to bolster her knowledge.

The student and I reviewed all of her chemistry homework. Material included quantum mechanics of electrons, orbital levels, and electron configurations of atoms, among other related topics. She seemed to have a great understanding of most of the material, but struggled a bit with spectra problems and higher level concepts, as well as being tripped up by small mistakes a couple of times. I advised her to practice the spectra problems, but she seems to have a good understanding and will most likely be ready to test on the material by simply reviewing what we went over.

Tonight, the student and I went over questions 7-15 for his exam tomorrow in detail. He understood most of the basic concepts and I explained the things that they maybe didn't go over clearly in class. He said that the session went pretty well and we're likely going to meet on Mondays going forward to review material.
