Session Summaries by LSAT Tutors

Hartford, CT LSAT tutoring
The student's most recent practice test was very promising: she finally broke that 170 barrier, and overall, she's feeling good about it. Her logic games performance was almost perfect. We focused primarily on reading comprehension, going over the note-taking strategies at first, then transitioning to the "vetting" step, how to be absolutely certain which piece of text confirms the answer choice. We also discussed how the test maker will tend to twist specific pieces of information to make them seem correct, even though they're distorted. She's going to take another test this week.

This was our first session, and we did an introduction to diagramming and working with subsets. She has great aptitude for logic games! For the next couple weeks before we meet again, she is going to read the intro chapters of the book and finish up the rest of the first unit on logic games.

Today the student and I simply worked through some practice problems of each type that appear on the LSAT to get a feel for how she thinks, as well as her strengths and weaknesses. She has already developed a very methodical approach to the test, which is helpful. However, she sometimes has trouble identifying key facts or arguments in the logic and reading sections. Similarly, with the logic games, she has a solid approach and knows how to solve the questions given time, but she struggles to quickly make the logical leaps that will allow her to effectively complete the section within the time limit. We will continue to work on this. For next week, I've asked her to finish the practice sections we were working on as well as complete 1 additional section.

Today the student and I worked on the reading comp portion of the LSAT, with special emphasis on how to read the passages to anticipate the questions. Throughout the session, his timing and understanding of what the questions were asking improved, but he still needs to practice going back into the passage to find the needed information. We will continue to work on this.

Today the student and I worked through another complete logical reasoning section and half of a reading comprehension section. We talked about strategies related to timing, and how she could best balance accuracy and speed on the LSAT. For next week, we will look more closely at assumption questions. These are questions that the student could probably use some more work on, and are a common question type on logical reasoning, so it will be good to get more practice in on these. Overall, it was another great session with the student, who was a pleasure to work with!

Today the student covered all 3 sections of the LSAT, spending most of our time on the review guide. The student did very well on these, handling the average difficulty questions with ease, and even performing well on the most difficult questions. No clear struggles were present in this session; the student performed well on all 3 sections, but needs to slow down a bit and take his time on some questions - while time management is an essential part of the LSAT, that also means knowing when to slow down and read carefully. We will keep working on this moving forward.
