Session Summaries by GMAT Tutors

Hartford, CT GMAT tutoring
The student's been doing sections of Logic Games on her own since we last met, and we began by discussing some of the problems she'd had, outlining a few new sketching strategies, particularly for double-layer or two-entity sequencing games. Then we moved on to Logical Reasoning, introducing the major question categories and running through the basics of arguments, how to spot conclusions and evidence, and what assumptions are (and how they factor into questions on the test). She's going to take a new test this week and we'll meet again after the holiday.

This was our first session, and we began our work on logic games, with an intro to the different types and a lesson on linking conditionals into chains. The student is going to do some practice and bring questions for me for our next session.

This was our second session. We switched focus to some logic games, which needed much work on the diagramming process. That will continue to develop over time, of course, but we built some much-needed confidence and opened up the doors to the most helpful methods. It seems difficult, but is often not that bad. Thanks!

This week we worked on some puzzles that the student had from a practice test. She had a solid foundation on each puzzle but made a few mistakes that prevented the whole puzzle from coming together. We addressed them, and the student should be able to improve her accuracy. We then worked on a couple other types of puzzles, including pure ordering and double line games. I wanted to focus on the process of getting a diagram, doing the first question by eliminating rule-breaking answers and then going to the easiest questions first. She understood the process and I am looking forward to seeing the results in our next session. She is going to do a minimum of one practice test this week and we will see where her score is as of next week. I would like to see where we are as of now. So far, the student is doing the work and understanding the concepts. If she just keeps practicing, the improved scores will happen. Great job so far!

Today the student and I first worked on some necessary assumption questions. After some practice, she seemed to be doing quite well on identifying the arguments and getting the right answers. We then worked on some logic games. She has a strong logical process she uses on working through the problems, but sometimes gets a bit overwhelmed on the questions that have too many or too complicated conditions. I think practicing just working through the questions systematically will make a big difference. She is going to complete a logical reasoning section as well as a couple of more game questions as practice for next week.

Today the student and I reviewed the rest of a logical reasoning section and some logic games. She quickly grasped the concepts behind the logical reasoning questions, and she seems to have a good grasp on the games that we've done so far as well. Next week, we will finish reviewing her first test, before progressing to timed sections.
