Session Summaries by German Tutors

Hartford, CT German tutoring
As usual, we broke up our time into conversation, homework, and literature. We talked about doctor's visits and introduced some of the vocab appropriate for that context. We also talked at length about what he's reading in his English class. We reviewed prepositions in preparation for his quiz by making up a story out of the list of verbs that his teacher had given him to study. And we continued reading and analyzing sections of the poem "Altazor" by the Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro, focusing primarily on pronunciation. The student's intelligence, enthusiasm and positive attitude continue to impress me!

We reviewed a rough draft of an essay that the student had written, where I explained to the student why her teacher made the corrections that she did. The student was receptive to my teaching.

The student and I worked together to prepare for her oral exam on Tuesday. She was given two articles about father/daughter pairs and asked to compare and contrast their relationships, their socioeconomic statuses, and their views on tradition and change. The articles were dense with difficult vocabulary, and we spent the majority of the time reading them paragraph by paragraph for comprehension and taking notes for each category. At the end, she was able to form a strong thesis and was armed with many details to form her oral presentation. She will review it with me tomorrow.

For this session, we continued to focus on verb formation, and the student took two verb practice quizzes to master all of the verb tenses in Spanish. She has shown steady improvement in this skill since we first started using this approach. In addition to that, we looked at the AP practice exam, and did chose two practice questions, one free response, and one multiple choice. We plan to continue with these practices in order to be prepared for the exam.

The student and I started right away working again on subjunctive. We went over subjunctive versus indicative and she did well and felt very confident, so we moved on. She said that she has really been struggling with conditional versus future and "si" clauses. We created some exercises and worked on those as well. I noticed that irregular future and conditional conjugations need more attention and I asked her to work on those before our next session. She is going to see if she can find out exactly what she needs to work on for her test retake on subjunctive and we will focus more on that in the next meeting. In general, she knows her Spanish well and has excellent pronunciation. In the future, we will work on prepping for her AP test that is coming up in May, as well as any classwork with which she is struggling.
