Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Hartford, CT Elementary Math tutoring
For this session, the student completed his homework packet including math, language arts, and spelling. He did a great job on his math. He seems to be getting the hang of double-digit addition. He just needs reminders to add on the right column first. Great job!

In this first session, the student and I did some basic math, reading, and Spanish speaking in order for me to get a sense of where she was at in each subject. She is strong with her counting and with basic addition. We played some numbers games in which she had to use her fingers to show me different quantities. We also read several stories, and I had her play a game where she matched a picture to the correct word describing that picture, which showed me that she does have beginning reading abilities. Throughout, I inserted Spanish, and I repeated what I was saying in both Spanish and English.

We primarily worked on the student's math homework - a worksheet on the metric system (converting between km, m, and cm) - and solving word problems using those skills. She had a good understanding of the concepts - she only encountered trouble a few times when converting from m to cm. But we worked on some extra problems I made up to make sure she understood. We also played some math games involving multiplication. Since she still needs to work on memorizing her times tables, I thought this was a good way to get some practice in. She seems to respond better to something like a game rather than just simply being quizzed. We will need to work on her having everything memorized, but I did notice an improvement in her multiplication skills from last week. And she told me that she had gotten an A on her last math quiz, which was great to hear! I noticed she struggles a bit with subtraction sometimes, so I have made a note to work on that in the next session.

The student was in a good mood today, so we got quite a bit of work done. We started with practicing her 5 and 10 flashcards, and while she didn't move any more into the "in a snap" pile, she didn't forget any either. She also had science homework today, where she had to match up the measurement vocab word with a corresponding icon, which was fairly straightforward for her. I had also, for a bit of a change, brought a color-by-multiplication worksheet, which she really enjoyed, and I can tell that the multiplication facts are really starting to cement in her memory.

The student and I spent 30 minutes on number recognition up to 20. Then, she spent 15 minutes on her Thanksgiving writing homework. Last, we spent 45 minutes on her sight words. We read the words, and spent time finding them in literature. She did great today.
