During my single session with the student we reviewed for her upcoming calculus test. The test will be on some important concepts of calculus, including the product rule, quotient rule, chain rule, and implicit differentiation. She had a list of review problems covering each concept, which we worked through as I explained each step and discussed with her how to apply the chain rule or whatever other concept was needed. We spent most of the time on implicit differentiation, as she felt this was the most important area to review, and even before any explanation she was able to comfortably differentiate each term and separate them to solve for dy/dx. By the end of the session she said she felt very prepared for her test and I agreed that she should have no problem doing well on it.

The student has an exam coming up so we reviewed all the covered sections. The first piece was on u-substitution - starting off with the basics and progressing to trigonometric, logarithmic and inverse trig functions. The other main piece was on finding volumes of regions rotated around axis. There are two main methods for this - cylindrical shells and discs/washers. We reviewed when and how to use each method and generalizations.

We covered complex derivatives and finding critical/inflection points. The student didn't seem to struggle much with any of the concepts once I showed him certain techniques. Like always, he was very motivated and a pleasure to work with.

Our first session together we covered inflection points, concavity, finding max/mins. We also reviewed the chain rule. During the last part of the lesson, we covered related rates emphasizing taking the derivative with respect to t. I think the emphasis was on word problems. So I showed him how to take word problems and turn them into math problems which is something he will see a lot through calculus. The student is very smart and does math problems quickly in his head. I think he has a good foundation and just needs some practice with this new subject and new ideas.
