In these three individual meetings, the student and I covered material ranging from cellular respiration to the circulatory system for an upcoming exam. He had expansive factual knowledge entering into the sessions, but wanted additional explanations for the underlying concepts. I believe that our time was spent efficiently because he came prepared and willing to improve his grasp of the material. I demonstrated the value of drawing simple diagrams to illustrate each individual process that might appear on the test. I recommended completing a practice exam in order to gauge knowledge and understanding.

At this session, the student and I quickly went over last week's lesson to make sure that she understood the topic. I asked her some questions and for the most part she answered them correctly. I believe that she understands the concept but sometimes I feel like she has a hard time expressing what she means. We also went over the next topic, RNA and protein synthesis. I suggest that she take some time to memorize the terminology associated with these topics and it will help her when it comes time to explain the concepts.

The student and I talked about biochemical processes. Since she hasn't taken chemistry yet, we had to do a little chemistry work so she could understand chemical formulas. We did cellular respiration and photosynthesis, which she understands pretty well.

Today we covered problems with inheritance, codominance, and linked genes. For the more complex questions, I sent the student two links to help him through the problems as additional information to just me working through it on the whiteboard. I hope that this can help him understand the thinking behind some of the answers we got.

Topics covering DNA synthesis, transcription, translation, and properties of DNA were clarified. The student was struggling with minor details related to historical experiments leading to conclusions about the properties and function of DNA which were reviewed. She gained confidence in discussing properties of DNA. She was interested in reviewing the material and favored the approach of verbally summarizing class PowerPoints followed by being quizzed on terminology and key concepts. We practiced identification and matching problems provided in the PowerPoints. She will review this material prior to our next session on Saturday at which time we will also discuss DNA mutations.

Today's session was a mix of both geometry and biology. First I helped the student with a particular problem (scaling) in geometry that quickly made more sense to her after we did a problem together. We then moved on to biology where we discussed genetics, Punnett squares, and gene determination. By utilizing the Punnett squares, she can see how likely certain traits are going to be passed on from parents to offspring. I introduced a bit of new vocabulary that she will see in the very near future but at least now she has seen it once.
