Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We checked the student's homemade science test review sheet, and flipped through the book with him to 1) make sure he understood the mechanics/concepts of the vocab and 2) have him add in any information that was missing. In our next session, I will be asking the student to do a little extra work completely solo and then we will review his work together. We will continue to review the topics that appear in his studies to build up his confidence in his schoolwork."
"During this session we worked on reviewing for an upcoming test. This mainly involved going through a matrix that the student had created for the equations of work, heat, internal energy, enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy, and Helmholtz free energy under different conditions. While reviewing the table we discussed some of the different equations and clarified when there were multiple equations for a slot. We also spent a short time discussing some of the rules of logarithms. We ended the session discussing techniques for studying and doing well in courses as well as differing mind sets."
"The student and I discussed the significance of energy fluctuations, and that for a large system of N particles which is macro canonical, ensemble the energy fluctuation is close to zero and for micro canonical it is zero."
"Since the student has a quiz tomorrow on significant figures and dimensional analysis that is what we worked on today. He did not remember the rules for significant figures so we began by writing them down and discussing what they meant in the context of problem solving. I then reinforced and tested his understanding by assigning him problems from the tutoring database and having him explain his steps and reasoning to me. He needed some prompting and seems to be suffering from a lack of confidence, I noticed that on at least two or three occasions he had the correct answer, but when I asked for his logic he backed away from it. We made progress with significant figures and then moved onto dimensional analysis. I first walked him through a problem then had him solve a couple more, he picked up the concepts quickly and did well. As we finished I suggested that he attempt some in the morning to reinforce what we did today and to warm him up for his quiz."
"Solving first-order ordinary differential equations in an online math learning software. We reviewed examples and solved nearly an entire homework assignment together on this subject, including plotting and finalization of the math software code to compare numerically estimated solutions against analytical solutions."
"Student showed mastery of the momentum equation for the problem set that the student's instructor had left for homework. It's likely student will go more in depth in class at a later date. Today's session was guided practice of the student's homework. I also asked him about his precal homework. Student showed me his reviews and stated he had absolutely no questions about the material."
