The student and I went through her final revision of her argumentative essay, and I guided her as she re-ordered sections of it for a better logical flow. We also went over some article usage and spent some time on the order of adjectives, since she had a question about that.

The student and I went through lesson 10 on the phonics page. This lesson focused on the long sound of the E, along with letter pairs that make this sound. These include EE, E_E, and EI. She did extremely well during this lesson! She still struggles a little with picking out the correct vowel sound when reading words, however. I believe she tries to go too fast sometimes. We will definitely continue to work on that.

The student and I went through the preposition book that her sister and I had read. As expected, she had a much easier time with the actual reading. We then discussed what we had learned about prepositions and went on to point out prepositions in her "What To Do About Alice?" book. For homework, she is to read the first two chapters of "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe," write down any questions she might have, and write descriptions of each of the characters we meet in those chapters.

The student and I were able to phase out all of her flashcards except one. We reviewed the words several times and then she read sentences that I created with them. She has done great work with these words. Using the preprimer and primer word lists that her teacher sent home, the student read the words with 100% accuracy. We also practiced digraphs and read stories that focused on these words.

The student and I worked extensively on his sight-reading skills. He also worked on finishing his reading homework. He continues to struggle with phonics, so we worked on those the most. For this session, I utilized practical uses of each word, to help him retain and make connections for better sight-reading. He is to be tested for sight-reading and dictation on Tuesday, so I administered practice tests. I also left a practice test for him to practice in the morning.

The student and I worked in the phonics book, on adjectives (especially to develop vocabulary) and with marbles to exemplify the concepts of "equal," "more than," etc. We then did a TPR activity, Simon Says. In the phonics book, I read two poems and had her repeat line by line. We focused on key words in the poem. I also asked her about the pictures accompanying the poems and to describe them. She then did the accompanying 2 activities in the book that included rhyming words. Next, I told her about adjectives. I showed her and spoke with her about feelings-related adjectives. I asked her which adjectives described her personality. Next, I had her select objects out of a bag and describe them as well. She is very comfortable with me and is having fun. I believe her confidence in expressing herself in English is growing.
