Session Summaries by Spanish Tutors

Hampton, VA Spanish tutoring
The student and I spent the entire session writing his upcoming speech in Spanish 2. He chose his topic to be his mom, and came up with a lot of good ideas. He still struggles a bit with indefinite/definite articles, and when to use them/agreement, but is definitely improving. He was able to grasp a bit more complex grammar concepts (para que, en que, etc.).

The student has shown some great progress since our last session. Today we reviewed many of his homework problems focusing on pronunciation, meaning and how to adequately tackle them. He had tackled some of the problems by himself prior to the start of the session and that made the tutoring much more useful as we were able to go into specific parts that troubled him. I believe he has done some incredible work throughout the week and is showing good signs of improvement. I definitely think he will be able to improve his grades if he keeps up the good work.

The student and I worked on a customer/waiter dialogue for a restaurant, to extend what he's been learning about food at school and practice some new verbs as well. We will continue to work on language learning for practical situations in upcoming sessions.

Today I reviewed the verbs ser, ir, and gustar with the student as we reviewed his homework assignments. We began by looking at the verbs ser and ir in the preterite tense. Then I helped him with an exercise where he had to answer questions about the last time that he went to the movies. For the next part of his homework, we looked at the verb gustar along with a list of similar verbs. I explained to him that he would have to add the indirect object pronoun first then use the third person singular and plural ending for each verb. I wrote a chart in his book that he can reference when he needs help. We had fifteen minutes left where I helped him complete an exercise in his chapter review. He was able to write six sentences about the daily routine of two people he knows. We will meet again this Thursday.

During this session, the student and I prepared for his upcoming test, and were able to get a head start on grammar that had not yet been reviewed in class. Specifically, we discussed the use of estar+a past participle, what a past participle is, and how they are formed in Spanish. We went through multiple examples, and even did a practice exercise in his book. We reviewed the uses of ser and estar, as this will also be on the test. As a warm up to begin the session, I had him conjugate approximately 6 verbs in both the present, imperfect, and the preterite. The verbs that he conjugated contained a mix of irregular preterite verbs, irregular present tense verbs, and stem changers. With all of the nuances of the verbs across tenses, he did very well on this exercise. He wrote notes on the few errors that he made, which will help him to study for the test. We used the last part of the session to create a very specific study plan for his test next Thursday. From there, we put together a list of all of the things that he should be able to do in preparation for the test, such as: conjugating irregular preterite verbs, list the past participle irregulars, know all vocabulary, etc. We then wrote down specific days that he would study for each topic. The overall goal of the study plan is that the two days before the test will be used as a review of what he has already studied- rather than to use those days as heavy studying days. We created a more specific plan until Sunday. When we meet again on Sunday, we will see how the plan has worked for him and will prepare how he should prep for the test up until Thursday.

For our last lesson, the student and I reviewed vocabulary that might be used in the workplace, such as dates and times. We also practiced conjugating those verbs in the present tense. We used audio clips from a podcast and video, and then scripted conversations out of my workbook. He did really well, and I look forward to working with him in the future.
