Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Hampton, VA Reading tutoring
The student mostly worked on completing his homework assignment which was focused on adding two-digit numbers. This was fairly easy for him to accomplish. To provide reading enrichment, I introduced him to the skill of making inferences. We completed an activity where we read a paragraph and answered questions about what was happening based on the clues provided in the story. We also reviewed his spelling words with the short e, o, and u and arranged them in columns based on sounds. Next week we will continue working on the inference activity and some fluency practice.

The student had a lot of worksheets today and she tore through her work! I was immensely impressed. She was really excited about the idea of finishing everything and wanting to tell her mom about getting through all of the work. Several math concepts that she previously struggled with are coming along better now. She's turned a corner in her comprehension as well. It was nice to see her so focused and feeling so accomplished today.

We covered chapters 10/13 in TKAM. Some chapters were detailed, so it was difficult to recall specific events. I had him focus on the gist of each of the teacher's questions about these chapters. That helped him organize his answers. Overall, he seems like he wants to improve his skills. We will meet again this week.

The student and I continued to focus on digraphs, common endings such as -ing and -ed, and long and short vowels within words. We read a book together that focused on all of these aspects and then played a game of spellominoes, which helps to focus on making words using different digraphs and endings. Her confidence is growing in her reading abilities, and she is becoming a more fluent reader.

The student did a great job tonight! She has final exams coming up in a couple weeks. Her teachers have given great study packets with suggestions of materials to put together and terms to know. She and I worked on organizing a lot of her materials for her English test. She made a study calendar which she will fill out each day, and started a new folder specifically for her study materials. We talked about what we will focus on in our tutoring sessions for the next few weeks as well. I made her some goals to have completed by next week when we meet. We also went through her new unit of words, talked through definitions, and worked through the practice sentences in her textbook. She has great organizational tendencies and her goal for the week is to follow through on those plans in her studying.
