We went over the student's first exam. where she scored in the low average range I also gave her tips on graphing for her freezing point experiment, and we worked on this together. Finally, we looked at online hw from current and future work. The student has improved with - but still needs to work on - handling exponents, dig figs, and stepwise organization of multi part problems. We will continue to work on these areas in future sessions. Both her confidence and skill have grown overall.

We discussed the student's science packet, which covered basic physical science and chemistry. We reviewed types of matter, and the characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases. He seems to have a strong understanding of these topics. We will continue to work on this next week before it is due.

Today we covered both Chemistry and Precalculus, as the student has an exam on both subjects on Wednesday. For chemistry, we specifically covered the topics of solubility and obtaining final concentrations after equilibrium is established, as well as determining precipitate formation using equilibrium constants of various compounds. For pre-calculus we discussed the various trigonometric functions as well as their graphs and applications of the functions. She has no problems answering the questions in both topics and probably needed a confidence boost instead by having my presence there. She is definitely ready and prepared for the exam and even without the session, I am confident that she would have done fine. Although she has a strong foundation in the subject matter, her attitude with the problems was that they were very long and involved problems.

The student and I briefly discussed the format of the semi-weekly quiz structure of his AP biology course before starting to review for his upcoming quiz on cell signaling and the endocrine system. He had briefly reviewed the chapter on cell signaling and had taken notes in class, but wasn't quite clear on what was going on. By taking a step back and explaining the overall use and goals of cells' signaling processes, things seemed to become much clearer as we reviewed the details. His textbook (the standard textbook for AP biology) tends to teach basic mechanisms first, detailed mechanisms next, and big picture last. It's clear that talking to the student about the big picture first is much better. After the big picture overview, we reviewed the different categories of cell signaling and the different methods of cell signaling, first generally and then in more detail and with examples. During this, though, it became clear that some of the underlying knowledge of DNA transcription and translation needed reviewing, so we took a brief detour for that. Throughout, he was an excellent student to work with, asking questions as we went along and repeating back information in his own words to make sure he understood the concepts. He was engaged and attentive during the entire session, needing almost no help from me to stay motivated in his learning. Finally, we talked about general study strategies. I suggested he focus on understanding the figures, the figure text, and all the related vocabulary in bold and italics from his textbook; an understanding of these concepts is what the text is aiming for, and focusing in this way can avoid the unnecessarily floral language and similes. For next session, he will provide me the topics of the next quiz, and I can come prepared with my own notes and illustrations of the big-picture concepts before we dig into the details in his textbook.
