Session Summaries by LSAT Tutors

Hampton, VA LSAT tutoring
We reviewed geometry that we covered last time, continued by introducing and completing coordinate geometry, learning the basic stats concepts like mean, median, mode, and range, and did some problems with those. The student's attitude was good as always. I left him with the task to complete a GRE math practice test and we will go over his score and the questions he gets wrong. He said that he has already taken a practice test and has improved his score so far, even though he feels he has more ground to cover before his exam. Given that he started in the 10% range and said he moved his score up to the 50% range, that would be a huge win if he can replicate that on more exams, given how much improvement that would be in only about a month of tutoring.

During our session, the student and I went over a number of practice sets she did over the holidays. We went over a quantitative comparison practice set, as well as a lengthy set of only quantitative comparison questions from another test book. We found that she is still having trouble with questions where you need to pick values and solve; however, she has shown dramatic improvement in other areas such as counting, word problems, and coordinate geometry. In the next few days, she will work on timing and memorizing formulas for her test on January 2.

We went over the practice problems that I assigned the student a week ago; she did a pretty awesome job in avoiding calculation errors, and I also taught her couple of tricks to approach questions faster.

We continued with our review practice, which went very smoothly. We covered ratios/proportions and some basic statistics. It seems clear to me that the more we practice, the easier the concepts are coming back, which is exactly what I wanted from this sort of review. I advised the student to focus this weekend on looking over the geometry formulas as well as some of the algebra so that we can really get through that review practice quicker. There is just over a month until she takes the exam, and the goal is to be on real practice sections by the second week of February.

We began by reviewing several small issues that the student had with the assigned algebra and percentage problems. There were no major worries here. I then reviewed some further word problem details in the percentages chapter and assigned that section of problems. We also worked through the major concepts in inequalities /absolute values and fractions/ decimals. I assigned accordingly.
