How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

Schools at the elementary, middle, or high school level can be quite competitive. Getting your child accepted into one of these can be as challenging as a prestigious college. Administrators may solely look at your student's Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) scores to make their decision. It's therefore essential your child does their best on this approximately three-hour exam. Varsity Tutors can help get them connected with outside help. A skilled ISEE tutor in Hampton, VA, can assess your child's abilities to try to help them perform their best on the ISEE.

The ISEE has five sections. It covers everything your child has learned thus far in verbal reasoning, including synonyms and sentence completion. Numbers and operations, algebra, and geometry, among other math concepts are used to gauge your child's quantitative reasoning skills. Other math skills, plus reading comprehension and an essay, are included on the exam. The lower, middle, and upper versions of the test include the same topics, but at different levels of difficulty.

Hampton, VA ISEE tutoring
The student had a difficult time with reading comprehension and writing tasks. He was able to complete the tasks, and at the end of the session we read for 20 minutes, which he very much enjoyed! His level of focus was awesome!

Good session! We went through three passages (Earthquakes, the Grand Canyon, and Abraham Lincoln) and a variety of question types, including short answer, multiple-choice vocabulary in context, and inference. The student stayed focused and answered the majority of questions correctly. At the end of the session, I had him tell me three things he learned about each topic to see if he was retaining short term, and he did it!

The student is a very bright young man. Today we covered 28 math problems, and he needs help focusing and reading the question's options before trying to solve the problems (we will work on this in future sessions.) There are also math problems on the test that he has not learned yet that I will teach him. Overall it was a very productive session! I left the packet of questions with him to review and practice.

Today we extensively studied vocabulary. She had a list of words to write sentences for about her school, so we discussed various possibilities and came up with multiple sentences per word. She then completed an Upper Level ISEE practice test online.

We continued our work on solidifying the multiplication table. I had the student make one for herself to put up at home, with markers and different colors. Because I realized there were some tricks that make memorization easier, I suggested to her to memorize according to rhythm (by walking around the kitchen island while memorizing). This is because physical activity reinforces memory, and also makes it more interesting. She should no longer be counting in her head in the future, and the numbers will come to her much quicker. For homework she is to memorize the tables from 1 to 6. And next session we will memorize 7 to 9, which are more difficult. Soon she will be able to recite from the table very quickly and correctly.
