How can GRE tutoring help you succeed?

The GRE, or Graduate Record Test, is an important aptitude test for students looking to get into graduate school. The skills that you have acquired through your high school and college years are the measures. The GRE is one of the most important criteria used to determine graduate school admission and can also compensate for a lower than desired GPA in college. The proper tutor could help in a variety of ways. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors are skilled at helping students in Hampton, VA, connect with GRE tutors.

The GRE will take three hours and forty-five minutes to complete and the score is valid for five years. The test consists of three sections including analytical writing, verbal, and quantitative. Most graduate programs use the results on the verbal and quantitative sections more in their decision making process. The experienced tutor that Varsity Tutors can connect you with understands that students come from varying educational backgrounds and have different skill sets. Finding a tutor that is a personality match is important. Also, working one-on-one with a GRE tutor in Hampton could make studying easier. In this way your tutor can create a personalized plan centered on your specific needs.

Session Summaries by GRE Tutors

Hampton, VA GRE tutoring
The student and I had our last session (before her test next week) where we went over miscellaneous topics she was still having trouble with including data interpretation, probability, rates/ work, and translating English into algebra. During the next week, she will do as many practice problems as she can, ideally those on the computer so she gets used to the format. She will also study her formulas, and go over topics such as geometry and coordinate geometry. I wish her the best of luck on her test!

We covered algebraic fractions and geometry. We spent about half the lesson going over all the important geometry formulas to know for the GRE because those are the fundamentals for solving all of the geometry problems. I left the student with some example problems that he could look back on to fully understand the steps necessary to solve them. The biggest challenge with him is just starting from square one, so I have to do quite a lot of teaching, as opposed to helping with certain points where he's getting stuck. This just means that he needs to continue to do questions on his own to try to bring me questions. Overall, we are covering good ground, and he is building up his skills.

Our session began while the student was in the middle of taking a practice test, so we started by going it. After reviewing a little bit about factoring (from last time), we went over 4-5 problems from the practice test that she had highlighted for explanation. From there, we began one of the GRE quantitative comparison problem sets, stopping along the way for additional practice on problems that needed work. The concepts we reviewed are rules of exponents, the trick of "multiplying by one" when you are given a crazy expression to interpret, function notation, and two general strategies for choosing answers when you don't know exactly how to do the problem (make a table, and plug in numbers). In the next session, we will review the results of her complete practice test.

We went over the practice test that I assigned to the student in the previous weeks, and we will focus on the algebra and probability section next week. We will move from easy level practice to hard. The student is having a GRE exam in February so next week should be her last session.

We reviewed some questions from the arithmetic and algebra chapters assigned. The student had a good handle on much of the material. Some additional work was needed in algebra, partly to deal with quadratics (especially differences of squares). Then, we worked on an introduction to percentages. I assigned the first 26 problems of that chapter to her.

We continued our review in the book with percentages and ratios. I think we made real progress in this session in terms of linking together concepts, which makes it easier to complete the practice problems. We have set a goal of getting through the general review in the next couple weeks so that the student has a few weeks to do actual practice tests. I suggested that she focus on re-learning some of the geometry during her study time in addition to looking through a list of all the GRE topics and noting what she feels confident about and what she definitely needs a more thorough review on.
