Session Summaries by English Tutors

Hampton, VA English tutoring
We used a 7th-8th grade reading comprehension book to work on pinpointing the main idea, supporting ideas, writing summary, and other reading comprehension exercises. We worked specifically on using the supporting ideas in a paragraph as a method to decide what the main idea really is. We also worked on underlining and annotating to make reviewing easier.

The student and I spent most of the time on expository writing. We talked about the structure of expository essays- intro, body, conclusions- and how to brainstorm. I showed him a strategy called Pick-List-Choose to help him brainstorm. He was able to come up with much better main ideas. After talking about main ideas for a while, we talked about details. After all of this, we went back to the essay he wrote in class about love, and mapped out an expository essay on the topic by brainstorming and choosing distinct main ideas. For the last part, we talked about grammar, and went through a few pages of basic grammar where he identified the parts of sentences.

The student did well, but needed some prompts to stay on task and to identify the main idea correctly. She is doing well with determining the meaning of word from the context.

Awesome session! We finalized the Breakthrough essay, and worked on the parent questionnaire. Homework was to finish the 3 pages for the research paper. Very good progress.

The goal of my first session with the student was to assess his writing abilities and to discuss the learning goals he and I will aim to cultivate throughout the course of our time together. After talking with him, I learned that he disliked writing because he has a hard time understanding his assignments and even harder time coming up with ideas and expressing those ideas in a written format. I explained to him that anyone can become a good writer, because there is a structure to writing that can be learned. I also explained how the difficulty he has with writing is one felt by all writers at one point or another. This seemed to really reassure him, and from there, he became much more open to trying new critical thinking and writing exercises. We began by going over the "steps to completing a writing assignment," which cover how to really read the instructions of the assignment, brainstorming your ideas, coming up with a thesis, and outlining your assignment. I then showed him a free-writing exercise to get him warmed up. This exercise asked him to create a story based on three words and to write as much as he could in 15 minutes. He did a marvelous job! He came up with a truly creative story and I could see that he was quite pleased with his efforts. This gave him the confidence to try his hand at a more formal writing assignment.

In our session this week, the student and I worked on discussing a book that he has started to read for class. From this, we got into his assignment to write a summary of a chapter from that book. Before we began working on the summary, we read through the chapter in question together, pausing after every page or two to answer a few critical reading questions. These questions were meant to help him stay engaged with what he was reading, as well as to get him thinking about what he might wish to include in his summary. He was quite enthusiastic about this and very eager to read. I was very glad to hear about the improvement he saw in his grammar test grade! He really put a lot of work into improving on that, and I'm glad to see that it paid off!
