Hampton, VA Elementary Math tutoring
For this session, the student completed his homework packet, including math and his spelling words. He also practiced his money skills. He is now able to identify and name the value for each coin. He was able to count coins up to $1.00 with very little assistance. We then played a game that he seemed to really enjoy!

The student and I worked on preparing for her math test this Friday. She has a pretty good grasp on concepts. I asked her to focus on three things: 1. Checking her addition (especially carrying 1s and 2s), 2. Checking how many decimal places should be in the final answer by counting how many are in the problem, and 3. Not to worry about doing things quickly or getting things right, instead be patient and try to see where you tend to make mistakes.

We worked on multiplication facts and facts/opinions with a reading passage and reviewed the student's spelling words today. I noticed that the 4's math facts are the most difficult for him, although he needs to practice speed and fluency for all his facts. I spoke to him about how writing things can really help you remember, so making flashcards not only creates a study tool, but just making them is studying as well. I left behind mad minutes, blank multiplication charts, and some riddle worksheets for math and word form of whole numbers (which we worked on in the first session). I would still like to see a writing sample. I have enrolled him in an online math facts practice site and sent his family the login information so he can start right away.

Yesterday, the student and I worked on one-step division problems. We also reviewed multiplication and division problems. he and I worked on adding and subtracting decimals. I also introduced PEMDAS to him. After working on math, we worked on identifying words with multiple meanings. This was a vocabulary building activity. After our session I talked to the student's father about his academic progress and we identified two areas to work with him in. The first area is fluency and the second is multiplication and division two-step problems.

The student worked on her grammar homework. Her goal is to finish all her homework independently in 45 minutes, so I timed her on each page (3-6 minutes) depending on the activity. I first explained what she needs to do and then let her do it by herself. I find that she focuses better when she's racing against time in short increments. I feel that she gets overwhelmed when she needs to concentrate for an extended period of time so I'm planning on giving this method a try for a while to see how she responds to it.
