Session Summaries by Economics Tutors

Hampton, VA Economics tutoring
The student and I had a great initial session. I obtained a background of her progress in the course, and the areas she was having difficulties with and focus on primarily the need to ensure that she is able to apply the concepts to her test questions. She also mentioned how she wanted to clarify her understanding of the use and application of graphs. We worked through a number of questions that covered concepts related to aggregate supply and demand, factors that can create curve shifts (including policy actions) and the resulting short and long term effects on output, price level, etc. In terms of policies, we primarily focused on fiscal policy and certain concepts related to monetary policy as well.

The student and I worked on some macroeconomics concepts including national income, savings/ investment identity, AD/AS models and the interaction of IS-LM model in how to the AD curve is defined. He needed help with some of the conceptual elements of the formulas and identities that defined the areas we were looking into. We considered that those would be areas of focus in our next session. He had a positive attitude towards the material that we studied together. We worked through a few problems that he had not identified correctly the last time he worked on his macroeconomics and were able to answer most of them correctly this time around. It was some good progress, but we are keen to continue to work towards greater understanding of all concepts.

For this session we covered the topics of GDP, CPI, and PCE. We covered the differences between real and nominal GDP and rising price levels, otherwise known as inflation. We went though some problems with finding out the real amount of money from decades ago according to changes in the CPI. The student's attitude was still positive and great, and there will be a midterm coming up in the next few weeks. The strategy I incorporated was to let her try to solve the problems on her own and I guided her through them. Overall good progress.

We went over practice tests dealing with the unemployment-inflation relationship and real versus nominal GDP. I showed the student a formula for calculating real GDP using price indices and nominal GDP. We created a study plan for his exam on Monday, with 3 study sessions. I also told him to create 3 lists of understanding (Good, On the Fence, and Totally Lost) during our first study session. The things he was on the fence about would become more clear after 2 study sessions, and he should bring anything he was totally lost on to our next meeting on Monday. The student had a better understanding overall, especially on items we covered last time and today.

We covered inflationary and recessionary gaps, as well as fiscal policy techniques for dealing with varying economic circumstances. The student felt more comfortable with this material than before the session. He will do additional exercises from his instructor and send them to me for review. A number of concepts really seemed to "click" with him in this session.

This was our first lesson. The student had read the first two chapters of her text before the lesson. She is doing self study for this course). She is VERY bright and picks things up fast. I would say today's class covered two weeks of what would be done in the classroom. She has plenty of practice problems and she will let me know if she has questions.
