Session Summaries by Anatomy Tutors

Hampton, VA Anatomy tutoring
In this session we worked on algebra 2 on parent function followed by physics. The physics involved kinematic problem solving. In addition we worked on his problem solving mechanics. I provided a very structured format for his work and that seemed to help. Organization is an issue we are working on.

Briefly went over the slides from lecture. Focused most of the session on balancing reactions. Went over the procedure for how to do it then worked through a worksheet the student was given in class. She did well, but we will definitely need to review the states of matter and types of reactions next session.

Our session today, in further preparation for the student's general chemistry placement exam taking place this weekend, focused on basic reaction types and how to identify them. She came to the start of our session with a couple sample questions representative of those that will appear on the test. One of the few that she was unsure about asked to predict one of the products of a reaction combining a solution of sulfuric acid with a solution of sodium hydroxide. I explained that this was an example of an acid-base neutralization reaction (one of the basic reaction types). I explained generally how to identify acids and bases, and that water is always a product of these neutralization reactions. After that, I went on to describe precipitation reactions, which are combination of aqueous solutions that results in an insoluble solid product forming. After that, we moved on to combustion reactions, which always combine a carbon-containing fuel source with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. As a refresher, we practiced balancing the chemical equation for the combustion of propane. Expanding upon combustion reactions, I widened the scope to oxidation-reduction reactions (of which combustion is a subset). I showed her the general procedure of how to determine oxidation numbers (or charge) of any atom that is in a compound, given the standard values for oxygen, hydrogen, and all group I and II metals. We then broke down an example redox reaction into its component reduction reaction and oxidation reaction to illustrate how electrons are being lost or gained by each species. I then brought these concepts back to the combustion reaction to show how this is also a redox reaction. Having covered the basic reaction types, I concluded the session with a brief lecture concerning the conservation of energy (as well as mass) in chemical reactions, and how every chemical process either absorbs or releases energy (endothermic vs exothermic, or endergonic vs exergonic). Our final session before the exam tomorrow will be focused on a couple more basic concepts as well as review of the major ideas that we've covered throughout the course of our sessions together.

We continued to read through Einstein's Relativity book. Today we started to generalize special to general relativity, by taking the first steps toward non-inertial reference frames. We also read a bit about Minkowski's space-time metric and vector fields, specifically the gravitational field and the electric field. The student is eager to proceed with our sessions.
