I began this session with the student by talking with his mother about his recent exam scores. On his chapter 7 test, he scored a D, but she noted that the teacher had said that most of the students in the class did not do well on this exam. For his chapter 8 quiz, he had achieved a solid B, which is a marked improvement among his most recent scores. His only homework assignment for today was a worksheet assigned by his teacher that combined problems from the past three sections he had covered. This was a good setup, however, since one of his challenges is his difficulty in shifting back and forth between question types. In order to address this, I made a point of having him identify each problem type to me as we went along. At first, we worked through problems cooperatively, but once he got more familiar with the different questions, we worked independently and compared answers after each question.

The student's test on logarithms and exponential functions was pushed back to this week, giving us another opportunity to review problems relating to these areas. The student was adept in all manner of problems, and I suspect he will not have any issues with the test. We took an opportunity to revisit some older topics, focusing mainly on evaluation and graphing of piecewise functions.

The student and I reviewed two lesson topics in preparation for his quiz on Monday. We worked through several word problems using systems of equations with percentages, solutions, coins, monetary totals, and distance. I demonstrated to the student how he could use different versions of the d = r x t formula to set up his equations using distances; he seemed to like the mnemonic/graphic organizer that I showed him to help him determine which variable (distance, rate or time) he needed to solve for in the problem. We reviewed the substitution method for solving these systems of equations, combining like terms when solving for a specific variable, and how to check his problems by plugging in answers to both of the original set-up equations. The student was able to walk me through the last three problems we worked together, and he seemed to have a better understanding. We most likely will review these concepts again in preparation for his unit exam. He seemed comfortable with the material at the end of the session compared to the beginning. He was very cooperative and asked questions throughout.

Today we focused on simplifying rational expressions. We worked through one of the student's online problem sets and discussed each topic as we went. She was concerned that certain steps, factoring in particular, are difficult for her to complete quickly. I believe that with practice she will become more efficient with these problems, since she showed significant improvement during our session.

Met with student one first- we reviewed chemistry (as she has a test later this week). We worked on stoichiometry; grams to moles to moles to grams, etc. After a good hour of practice she felt good about how to do conversions. Student two and I then met and reviewed what he had learned so far in Chapter 5 including: exponents, logarithmic functions, etc. After a half an hour of practice and reviewing laws and rules he felt good about solving logarithmic functions.

Today we covered rational expressions. We worked on problems that involved reducing rational expressions, as well as determining which values cause those expressions to be undefined. The student showed me a quiz from the previous week. She received a 78 on the quiz which is a fantastic improvement from the 60 she received on the last quiz. I will be meeting with her again on Thursday of this week.
