How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

The ACT (formerly American College Testing) assessment is one of a number of standardized examinations that seeks to measure a student's abilities in many subject areas. The test is typically taken by high school juniors and seniors who sit for the test and send their results to colleges as part of their application. Colleges then use ACT scores as part of their admissions process to determine who is admitted each year. Students seeking ACT tutoring in Hampton, VA, can get assistance in locating an independent tutor from Varsity Tutors.

The ACT is administered in five different sections that are all given a definite number of minutes in which to be completed. There is a mathematics section, which includes questions from pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, and geometry. This section is given one hour. The English section lasts for 45 minutes and covers grammar and usage of the language and rhetorical skills. The so-called reading section of the test includes questions from a number of subjects, including social studies, humanities, and natural sciences. This section is allotted 35 minutes of time, as is the science section, which focuses on a number of questions regarding data, research, and conflicting viewpoints. If you elect to complete the optional writing section, you are given 40 minutes to provide your own position on a writing prompt provided to you. In all, if you sit for the ACT, you will be testing for two hours and 55 minutes (with the writing section, testing time stretches to three hours and 35 minutes). You could receive a composite score from 1-36.

Reviewed ACT English homework for the first half hour and completed drills with the Science section for the remaining duration of the session, focusing on the respective strategies for the Data Representation, Research Summaries, and Conflicting Viewpoints passages. She progressed well in the science sections throughout the session, but needs to be more cognizant of direct and inverse relationships depicted in graphs and tables. Assigned homework as discussed.

We worked on the first half of the math section. The student needs more practice with word problem (e.g. setting up system of equations). He's a quick learner. We can cover material quickly. If he has time, he should finish up the math section ahead of our next meeting on Thursday.

The student completed the last few science problems from the official practice ACT, then completed all of English and math problems 1-44 from the previous year's official practice ACT. The main reminders are to make sure and answer the specific thing they ask for on the "given that each are true" questions (e.g. "most specific detail") and to cut out parts of sentences that clutter them up and obscure the answer (e.g. prepositional phrases between the subject and verb). Solid work, as usual!

The student and I continued trudging through the math section. I feel we are making progress and he does a good job to intuitively solve many seemingly difficult questions. He seems to be struggling a bit with geometric questions, and we will work to address those more clearly in upcoming sessions.

The student and I went over the ACT reading medium-difficulty questions. She needed a bit of help with finding the tone of a piece. Her attitude was very positive, and she asked good, relevant questions. I talked about strategy in terms of specific questions and the overall passages.

We went through the rest of the student's study guide and spent a lot of time on converting between rectangular and polar coordinates, graphing sine and cosine functions, and conic sections. We also worked more on trig identities and come of the triangle formulas (law of sines, Heron's formula, etc.).
