"In our session, the student and I discussed an outline for his English paper on Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse-Five." The assignment is to write a five-paragraph essay on either: 1) content versus structure, 2) the unreliable narrator, or 3) humor and the absurd in "Slaughterhouse-Five." First, I asked him to provide a brief summary of the novel and share key ideas from his class notes. Based on the sections of the text that interested him most and his notes, he chose to write about the narrative technique of an unreliable narrator. Next, I helped him identify three key points to address in his body paragraphs. Then, he reviewed the book to find three textual examples to support each point. His ability to identify sections of text that are significant for literary analysis is much improved. Now he immediately goes to the text after suggesting an idea to find evidence to support his idea. His ability to identify themes is also much improved. We concluded our session by firming up his thesis statement."
