Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over another homework assignment dealing with shifting graphs and using the quadratic formula. She breezed through the problems once she understood the concept. The session went very well, I think prepping for the exam will also go very well. We agreed to meet more times during the week as its getting closer to the exam date."
"Today we covered properties of logarithms. I went over them with the student, and then we did some problems to make sure he understood them. Then went on to expand and simply logarithms and followed up with using the change of base formula to solve problems."
"We covered sequences and series, formulas for sequences, arithmetic and geometric series, sigma notation, and word problems involving series. The student struggled a little with the series notation but quickly understood after I explained it to him."
"We worked briefly on combinations and permutations. We then moved on to matrices. The student seemed confident with the problems. We are aiming for an A on the final."
"Today I did 6 lessons with the student that covered a review of topics from previous years of math - converting units in the metric and US systems, area of a shape by subtraction, area of a triangle, improper fractions and mixed numbers. For next time she needs to complete test #4 and also test #5."
"Today the student and I worked through a review packet for her test on simplifying and solving radicals tomorrow. She did really well with most of the material, but again had trouble remembering what to do when two variations of x (such as x^2 and x^3) were in a problem she needed to solve. These small algebraic steps are really important, and I tried to point out several examples where factoring was used. She understands the concepts of simplifying both square roots and cubic roots and had very few errors. Overall, I think she is well-prepared for her test."
"Went back over summations, focusing on those problems that the student missed on the test. Began and completed a worksheet on special right triangles. Went over the trigonometry needed for the upcoming homework assignment. We also began work on studying for the financial test. This was a much more focused and productive session than had occurred in the recent past."
"I continued to help the student review for his AP test. We went over all the free response questions from that section of an old AP Test. The questions included many important topics including area between curves, volumes of revolution, cross sectional volumes, differential equations, particle problems, Riemann sums, displacement, continuity, differentiation, and limits."
"We went over the student's review packet for the state exam he is taking. We covered nearly all of Part 2 and touched on a probability problem from Part 3. Specifically, the problems were mostly word problems, asking the student to write and solve expressions based on varying situations. There was also some geometry and probability. He has a terrific mathematical foundation. He solved most of the problems readily, in his head without any intervention on my part. He knows all of the basic principles of algebra and is capable of solving difficult equations. I created some practice problems during the session to gauge his abilities in the subjects presented by the review packet."
"The student and I covered a few challenging problems from her worksheet. The approach to solving these problems became clearer to her over the course of our session. She will continue to do more exercises in preparation for her exam."
"Went over her recent exam on the differential equation section over her course (10/10!) and decided to focus today on going over older material in preparation for her comprehensive final. We looked at problems from a challenging practice exam. Emphasis was on very challenging integration problems (trig substitution, partial fractions, integration by parts, deceptive u-sub) and improper integrals (comparison test and calculation of convergent integrals). I emailed her a copy of the exam and solution key for discussion next session."
"The student had just started getting back into his regular math class since the assessment tests. He was working on finding volume of different shapes. We spent a good bit of time reviewing polygons and quadrilaterals in particular."
