Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Read over older essay the student had written for class (fantastic) and developed new game plan: shorter 1-page responses without structure, like the prompts he received in high school. Will eventually move to higher levels of thinking but in concise format."
"Today, the student and I moved on to her review sections on vectors, polar coordinates, and complex numbers. She genuinely enjoys and excels at certain components of the vector work, particularly vector arithmetic, but determining parallelism proved challenging for her, especially since it involves a lot of fractional arithmetic. With time, though, she improved somewhat on the vectors, and with more thorough explanations than she received in class, she improved drastically on the polar coordinate and complex number sections. I believe she is ready for her exam tomorrow."
"First meeting with the student - we discussed his goals, chose an adequate workbook, and began by reviewing articles, personal pronouns, and -ar verbs. I left him with homework. We will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays."
"We reviewed chapter 9 and prepared for his quiz tomorrow. In the length of the 6 sessions, the student has brought his grade up. We are hoping he does well on his quiz and possibly can bring it up more."
"Worked on refraction with the student. She did much better on her reflection/magnification/mirrors test than anyone else in the class! Today we worked on Snell's law and critical angles. We set up an appointment for next week and started talking about Finals prep."
"Today the student and I worked on math concepts covered on the ACT. Since he is still in middle school he will not have covered a lot of the math tested on the ACT. He can definitely do it though, today he quickly picked up the algebra we did and was able to successfully solve questions after learning the material. I do think the math section will be the most challenging for him and should be the focus of our sessions. However, to confirm this he will finish taking a practice test this week so we can evaluate which sections that need the most work. It was a great first session!"
"The student and I went over practice test four. He had finished all of it except for the essay and a part of a Critical Reading Section. His scores were generally great. His writing section has improved a lot, as has his vocab and passage analysis. He had more questions wrong on a math section, but most of those seemed due to simple mistakes. We went over the math ones he had trouble setting up, and then we talked more about the essay. We're going to work on those more when we meet on Tuesday. "
"The focus of today's lesson was Vector addition. In order to determine how Vectors can be added together trigonometry is required to break vectors into X and Y components. Furthermore trigonometry is used when adding vectors to determine the orientation of the resultant vector. I felt that the student became much more comfortable working through these problems by the end of the session."
"Today we finished up the translation sections for the students upcoming exam that we hadn't gotten to before, Where he again struggled a lot with vocabulary, while doing well with grammatical constructions for the most part. Throughout the session, I brought back up some of the words he hadn't known, in hopes that repetition would make it stick, as has happened with some vocabulary previously. I also encouraged him once again to make vocabulary flashcards while studying. When we had gotten through the untranslated parts, we reviewed the translation passage for a quiz on Monday, and he did pretty well there, though sometimes he badly mistranslated because he was guessing based on his remembering the story, rather than actually dealing with the words of the current sentence. We reviewed a number of words that his teacher had isolated as things they should know for the test. With a good amount of review of his prepared translations, the student should be pretty well prepared for the test."
"Today the student and I worked on math homework. After finishing math we did practice exam problems. He will have a print out of grades on Thursday so we can see where he stands in all of his classes. Overall it was a good session. We are hoping to get more grades back soon."
"The student and I reviewed the procedure for finding the slope of an equation given two points. We also learned how to write a slope-intercept equation given two points, finding the slope and the y intercept. ."
"Today it was our first meeting. We spent some time reviewing their skills and getting to learn about their expectations. I explained them what my plan was and we got to work. We covered basic conversation skills, then the 'wh' particles ) where, who...etc.) and then some conjugations. We will move on further because they both have already some good skills. We'll meet again next Tuesday."
